I absolutely adore Max Jenkins and was super stoked to interview him for his new role in Perception (read our review – here). He was just as hilarious as I hoped and hope to see him in more features like this in the future.
Synopsis for Perception
A chance encounter becomes a dangerous obsession when a mysterious small-time psychic offers a successful developer a way to reconnect with his dead wife.
PopHorror – First, I’m a huge fan of your work, so thanks for talking with me. How did you get involved in acting and what inspired you to do so?
Max Jenkins – Hiee! I’ve always been sort of a rheumy Victorian lady in the body of a small boy, so it made sense to act. Then I got into LaGuardia High and the rubicon was pretty much crossed.
PopHorror – (Laughs) What was your first role?
Max Jenkins – Kenickie in Grease at French Woods. I had long Hanson hair so it made sense that I should be cast as a 23-year-old high school senior with chronic gonorrhea.
PopHorror – You’re hilarious. I loved you in the popular Netflix series Dead To Me. How did that role come about for you?
Max Jenkins – I auditioned. Liz Feldman read every gay in LA for the role of Christopher and I’m proud I was the one where she was like “wow that guy is weird as hell.”
PopHorror – Haha, same here. Could you relate to your character at all?
Max Jenkins – Not even slightly, which is why I’m obsessed.
PopHorror – Your new film PERCEPTION is out and I loved it. How did that role come about for you?
Max Jenkins – Brian Smith produced a play my mom was in. I think that guy knows everybody in New York. Love him, so happy he brought me out to Louisville for a few days. Such a great script.
PopHorror – Your character made me laugh with his eagerness and witty humor. Could you relate to him at all?
Max Jenkins – That was me making you laugh. Not him. It was me.
PopHorror – (Laughs) This is a horror thriller. Do you enjoy horror thrillers and if so what are some of your favorite ones?
Max Jenkins – It Follows, Green Room, The Invitation, One Hour Photo, Hereditary, Midsommar, House of the Devil, The Ruins, Let The Right One In, The Strangers…does Gaspar Noé count?
PopHorror – I love all of those as well. Also, would you do more horror/thrillers in the future?
Max Jenkins – Dying to. Tell Mark Romanek, David Mitchell, Ari Aster, Jeremy Saulnier, Karyn Kusama, Ti West, Bryan Bertino, Tomas Alfredson, and Carter Smith. And…fine, yes, tell Gaspar.
