I jumped on the chance to interview actress Amanda Fuller once I read her resume. Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, Grey’s Anatomy, Orange is the New Black… and that’s just the TV shows! Having just finished watching her latest film, All the Creatures Were Stirring (you can read our review here), I was excited to get this opportunity because Amanda is super talented and she’s everywhere. We talked about her career, the difference between TV and film, and of course, horror movies.
All the Creatures Were Stirring is now available on VOD, DVD and Shudder!
PopHorror: All the Creatures Were Stirring is such a fun anthology. What intrigued you and made you want to be a part of this project?
Amanda Fuller: Well, I kind of just did it because Rebekah and Dave asked me to, and I’d worked them before and loved them so anything they were doing I wanted to be a part of. They told me it was a Christmas horror anthology and I was like ‘that sounds RAD! Let’s do it!’ and then we did it! I didn’t even really get a script or anything, I trust them and like I said, I’d worked with them before and I loved working with them so, I was kind of game for anything. And luckily it turned out even cooler than I could’ve thought. I agree with you, I think it’s super fricking fun and I’m excited people finally get to see it.
PopHorror: With it being an anthology, what was your favorite segment?
Amanda Fuller: Ooohh. I loved all of them. I loved my own, not because of me but because it was a really cool segment, and Jonathan Kite kills it. I’d have to say that the one I pleasantly surprised by the most, was the most unexpected and I got the most enjoyment out of was the alien one, because I have kind of an obsession with aliens so as soon as I figured out that’s what was happening, I was just like, “Oh my God! This is exactly what I wanted to see!” So that one made the most impact on me because of my own personal obsession with aliens. And they did it so well. The actors that played the aliens were so good and I was hooked on that one. It’s great. They were all fun.
PopHorror: They were all fun. I forgot that I was watching a horror story at first haha. And then all of a sudden it reminds you that you’re watching a horror movie. You have quite an impressive resume, a lot of TV shows. Which do you prefer, TV shows or making films?
Amanda Fuller: Oh, gosh. I prefer doing both. They’re such different experiences. You can’t compare being a part of a family for six or seven years like I am with Last Man (Last Man Standing series) and there’s nothing like that, especially in this business. It’s hard to come by, so when it happens it’s very special. It’s a great schedule, you just have a blast and a lot of opportunity in growth with storytelling, which is fun.
But my heart is with films a lot of a time. It’s a very intimate family, it’s a very intimate experience because it’s for a shorter period of time. It’s very intense. There’s this collaborative part of it that’s so intensified I guess you would say, especially with indie films when you’re shooting something in 18-19 days, you’re working your asses off and so that’s like another completely different but unique and equally special thing to do. And I think the stories that you can tell with films are fun to have just as an arc and are very focused intent of what the story means and the purpose of it and that’s very special. I grew up doing TV and in the last 10 years I’ve done a lot more film. I love them both equally. They’re just different. I’m really lucky to be able to balance both because I think it’s nice to go back and forth.
PopHorror: What made you realize that you wanted to act?
Amanda Fuller: I don’t think there was ever really a choice. I came out of the womb wanting to be on stage and perform. I have three older brothers and I don’t know if that’s why. It’s just like in me. I mean, ask my family haha! I don’t think there was ever really a point where I made a decision, it was just something I always organically did. Luckily I have family and parents that supported me. They supported us in whatever we wanted to pursue and I think it was a nightmare for them, but luckily for me I got to do it from a young age. They always checked in with me to make sure I was still happy because the business can be ruthless and gut-wrenching at times, but I just never wanted to do anything else or be anything else but on set or on stage. It’s just who I am, I think. They’re the best. I’m very lucky.
PopHorror: What is your favorite scary movie?
Amanda Fuller: The Conjuring, the Shining, The Exorcist, The Stuff… it’s impossible to pick just one. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a filmmaker and fan that makes it so hard for me to answer that question, because I just have such a respect for any film that turns out awesomely, which is most films in the genre. It’s hard for me to compete films against each other. Those are some of my favorites. I don’t have just one.
