By this time everyone has already seen the groundbreaking musical adaptation of Wicked and it has certainly defied gravity all on its own. Cynthia Erivo is so magnetic as Elphaba Thropp that her performance manages to set a new standard for leading women in musicals.
However, with its sequel Wicked: For Good coming to theaters later on in the year, one can only wonder what the follow-up movie will hold and what direction the tone will take once it’s been released.
It could possibly get a lot darker under the villainous and wicked tone of Elphaba being alienated from the rest of Oz after she was used as a pawn by The Wizard. The sequel could go even darker into Elphaba’s madness.
We could potentially see a more eccentric and villainous leading lady coming from Erivo’s ‘Elphaba’ as she descends deeper into madness and chaos. Given that she currently has command of the flying monkeys, a more horror-centric musical could end up on the silver screens, as the characters have already been established.
Moreover, we can now do away with the resplendent and colorful munchkinland and enter a darker tone for the Witch’s castle and her rise into power. Surely, there has to be a more horror element to separate itself from the first film’s light-hearted, easy-going nature.
Only time will tell if the continuation of this story will see a darker and vile tone.
