Fantastic Fest 2020 Review: ‘How To Deter A Robber’

How To Deter A Robber premiered at Fantastic Fest 2020 tonight, September 29th, and it is one of the best films I’ve seen in a LONG time. It’s a dark yet humorous trip that delivers on all aspects! This film was written and directed by Maria Bissell. The cast includes Vanessa Marano, Benjamin Papac, Chris Mulkey, Jonah Ray, and Gabrielle Carteris.

Synopsis for How To Deter A Robber

Two teens playing amateur detectives get more than they bargained for when they investigate the wrong cabin in this darkly comedic romp.

This is a unique coming of age film that will have you laughing, crying, and wondering what will happen next. From the first scene to the last, I was hooked between the cheery holiday music, memorable performances, and fun storyline. How To Deter A Robber is like a teenage version of Home Alone.

How To Deter A Robber

It takes place during the Christmas season. Everything feels cozy and warm with the usual holiday fight between family members. However, two teens who are struggling with their next stage in life find themselves having to grow up quickly when they are put in a life and death situation. It’s so quirky and ridiculous but perfect in all the right ways.

Vanessa Marano and Benjamin Papac deliver charismatic performances and have great onscreen chemistry. Their back and forth banter came off as natural and highly entertaining. Chris Mulkey was equally phenomenal. His character is very wholesome, and helped deliver heartfelt comedic relief.

What I also loved about this film is that I had no clue how it was going to end. It could have gone in so many directions, and I liked that it kept me guessing. It’s not your average robbery gone bad, and some moments may shock you.

Final Thoughts

So far, I’m highly impressed by the films at Fantastic Fest 2020, and I truly appreciate the virtual screenings they have offered this year! Be sure to check out How To Deter A Robber and all the other films playing!
