The Fear Street books were my first exposure to horror literature. So, when I found out Netflix was putting out not one Fear Street movie but three, I was beyond excited. I loved the first two films (read another PH writer’s thoughts on them here and here), but I knew that the third film, Fear Street Part 3: 1666, would be the best of the trilogy.
Synopsis:
The origins of Sarah Fier’s curse are finally revealed as history comes full circle on a night that changes the lives of Shadysiders forever.
Fear Street Part 3: 1666 is a culmination of the origins of Sarah Fier and the finale of 1994. The cast includes actors from the first and second films. The 1666 part of the story has the vibe of The Witch and Crucible. It is a historical period horror film, so there is not much gore, but there is still that tension leaving you guessing what’s next. The third film takes us back to the origins of Shadyside which started as a town called Union.
Bad things have started to happen in Union. The water has been poisoned by a dead dog and food has gone rotten. It really turns ugly as Pastor Cyrus Miller (Michael Chandler) slaughters the children of Union by taking their eyes, propelling the townsfolk into mass hysteria. Sarah Fier (Elizabeth Scopel) and Hannah Miller (Olivia Scott Miller) are caught in the crosshairs.
Review
The first part of Fear Street Part 3: 1666 somewhat mirrors the original Fear Street books. We have the Goodes and the Fiers. Although it is not historically accurate to witch trials, it shows the mania and hysteria of that time. The accents used are heading towards the right time period, but I feel that they could have been done better. But the dialogue does not suffer because of the accents.
The second part focuses on taking on the responsible party behind the curse on Shadyside. The final plan takes place at the Shadyside mall where everything kicked off with Part 1. It is a high-stakes plan bringing the team against every Shadyside killer. The pacing is good, driving the film to its epic ending.
Overall, I love this film. I think it is the best out of the trilogy. It ties up all the questions from Parts 1 and 2. There is also potential for more films about the Fear Street books. Fear Street Part 3: 1666 is currently streaming on Netflix.
