Harker Jones’ ‘Cole and Collette’ (2018): A Short Film That Kidnaps Our Love For Mystery Thrillers – Movie Review

Mystery thrillers are a great mixture for fans of any genre. Since the dawn of cinema and even before then, people have been reading pulp comics, books, watching TV shows and movies. Even today, a marathon of Law & Order can be the best thing for the soul. We watch killers commit murder, and we follow along with the detective trying to solve the case. At times, we speculate who’s the killer, the why, and even the how.

When it comes to reviews, I stay clear of any spoilers because as a fan of movies, I want the viewer to walk in with an idea of what I thought of the movie vs walking in knowing what to expect and losing that moment of enjoying a movie. So for this film, there will be spoilers, and I have to say, reader, you have been warned. Cole and Collette was written by Harker Jones (One Hit Wonder 2021) and is a short film—six minutes, to be exact—it packs a huge punch of interest. The plot of the film is:

Amid a rash of crimes in her neighborhood, a woman fears someone is trying to make her the next victim.

Cole and Collette starts with Collette (Becca Buckalew: Manor 2020) who’s worried as she’s cleaning, which is a task any one of us will use to pass time. She is terrified that she may be a victim herself of the next crime. She’s watching the news as her boyfriend, Cole (Matt McAbee: Blindspotting 2018), is on his way home. For a brief moment, we get that rush of anticipation thinking could really she be next as she sees a shadow looming in the darkness.

I won’t spoil the ending, which has one heck of a twist, but I have to say that’s probably my least favorite part of the film. We get interested, invested, and boom, it’s over. It’s just a sample of what to expect from the cast and crew. There’s not too much dialogue. This helps Cole and Collette because we, the audience, have so many questions. We want to know more and how it all unfolded. I hope for success. If I were to be pitched this story, I would think that it’s a good idea, but to see the finished project, it’s interesting to see the work.

Cole and Collette has been playing festivals and was even the winner of a previous competition. If given the chance, I promise that there will be no boredom and pure interest will be peaked.
