Recently I spoke with the very talented horror artist Christina Jackson after her art blew me away the instant I set eyes on it. PopHorror loves promoting women in all types of horror and this artist is no exception. So naturally, I want to share all of her amazing work with the rest of the horror community. Read on to learn more about Christina, her artwork, and how horror inspires her to create these amazing projects.
PopHorror – Hey Chrissy! Thanks so much for taking the time to sit down and answer our questions! Can you please tell a little bit about yourself and how you got into art?
Christina Jackson – My name is Christina Jackson but everyone calls me Chrissy. I am currently residing in Texas with my family. Being an artist, I specialize in acrylic paint on canvas but I can and have painted with acrylics on a wide variety of other surfaces, including glassware, ornaments, plates, walls, and shoes. Horror and science fiction movies are my favorite with the Alien series and The Babadook being near the top of my list. Besides being a huge movie lover, I am an avid reader as well. Dean Koontz and Stephen King are two of my top authors. I love anything creepy and weird (laughs) which is probably why I specialize in horror paintings.
My favorite food is anything Italian including pasta, bread, and soup. Since moving to Texas, my favorite drink has become sweet tea. Sweet tea and coffee are my staples in life. My favorite colors are black and deep purple. If I could, I would have my whole house shades of purple, black and gray.
PopHorror – That is awesome! What draws to create horror art?
Christina Jackson – I think what draws me to horror art is my love of horror and strange things. I have always been a fan of fantasy and horror books, even as a kid. I grew up reading the Goosebumps series, and then as I got older, I moved on to authors like Stephen King, James Patterson, and J.K. Rowling. Besides reading, I grew up watching horror movies with my family and friends. The first movie I remember watching as a kid was Scream. I remember being about 5 maybe and watching the movie in my parents’ room, even though they told me I wasn’t allowed to (laughs).
As I got older, I started watching more and more horror movies. Within the last couple of years, I have began to play horror games, including Metro, The Last of Us, and Bioshock Infinite. Drawing horror art is so easy for me because I love horror. It is easy to paint and create something when the subject is something you are so familiar with and love.
PopHorror – Horror games are awesome! Who are your favorite characters to draw?
Christina Jackson – One of my favorite characters to draw is Ash from Evil Dead. I love drawing or painting him because every time I do draw or paint him, I feel like he turns out amazing. The last major painting I did was an Evil Dead painting and it is now one of my favorites. Another one of my favorite characters to draw is anything Tim Burton. I love Tim Burton’s style because it is unlike anything I have seen before. His style is all his own and I love seeing what I can make of his style. Finally, I like anything that I haven’t painted before because it gives me a challenge.
PopHorror – Ash is a great character! As are all Tim Burton’s characters! What has been your favorite piece to paint?
Christina Jackson – My favorite pieces that I have done are the Chucky and Tiffany pieces and my Evil Dead painting.
PopHorror – They are amazing! I want one! How would you describe your style of art?
Christina Jackson –: I would describe my style as realism with a twist.
PopHorror – What inspires you to do your art?
