Book Review: ‘A Puppet Scorned’ (2021) By Jamie Kort

I met our dear author, Jamie Kort, through Bookstagram when he approached me with a read/review request, citing his book as “bizzaro sock puppet horror.” That description alone had me intrigued and I am always game to read something different; in hindsight, I had no idea what I was getting into. Now, I am two books into this amazing little sojourn into the lives of sock puppets and am eagerly awaiting more.

Synopsis:

A dark-comedy, sock-puppet horror written by Jamie Kort. Enter a world where needles are sexy and knitting is deadly…

Camille and Brad are sock-puppets trapped in a dusty old attic. One day they find needles, and Brad teaches Camille how to knit sensuous and arousing patterns… but what begins as a journey of sexual awakening leads to the unravelling of Camille’s perfect world in a strangely twisted nightmare of obsession and betrayal.

Shannon Marie’s Review:

“When I was young I met the most handsome, striped sock puppet in the world. He swept me off my cuff. The sweet words he’d whisper about my yellow polka-dots made me go all frizzy. When he held me I could do naught but hang limp, entranced by his googly eyes.”

When a story starts out like this, it has my full, smiling attention.

Camille is a sock puppet in love. Every inch of her wooly body yearns for her attic-mate, Brad. Brad is eager to show her the pleasures of the knitting needles; their erotic clicking signals the beginning and end of the love that Camille cherishes. What is stitched together, let no sock tear asunder.

This may be one of my favorite reads this year! In 34 pages, this author managed to knit a tapestry of love, betrayal and obsession, embroidered with some creepy crawlers and a stitch of mother’s love.

Knit, pearl, knit, pearl – into a beautiful family that I want more of.

“We are a family now, Brad…” I whispered… “…together forever, my love…”
