Slither is the kind of movie that doesn’t try to choose between horror and comedy. It commits fully to both. The result is something messy, weird, and surprisingly fun. Released before director James Gunn became widely known for big superhero films, Slither feels like a filmmaker cutting loose. It’s relatively low budget, but that doesn’t always stop the horror genre…sometimes it uses that limitation to its advantage!
Why Slither Creeps Into Ya
The film is directed by James Gunn and stars Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Rooker, Tania Saulnier, Brenda James, Gregg Henry, and Jenna Fischer. It happily blends horror, comedy, and science fiction, all set in a small town that quickly turns into a nightmare (you would not want to live there).
The cast works well together. Fillion plays the sarcastic but determined police chief, Banks grounds the story emotionally, and Rooker dives headfirst into the film’s grotesque side, almost like it’s a slip-‘n-slide. Fun stuff!
The Story (No Big Spoilers)
The setup is simple. A meteorite crashes near a quiet town and releases a parasitic alien organism. It infects a local man, and from there things start to go wrong. Very wrong.
What follows is an escalating outbreak involving slug-like creatures, disturbing body transformations, and a growing hive mind. The infection spreads quickly, and the town begins to unravel. At the center of it all, the police chief tries to contain the situation before it becomes completely unstoppable.

What Makes It Stand Out
The first thing most people notice is the practical effects. This movie is packed with them. There are squirming slugs, unnatural mutations, and a lot of goo. It’s the kind of hands-on creature work that feels inspired by older horror films. Granted, CG can be okay, but it’s still hard to beat practical!
The tone is just as important. Slither never takes itself too seriously. It mixes dark humor with genuinely unsettling moments, often switching between the two without warning. One minute you’re laughing, the next you’re cringing.
You can also feel its influences. There are clear echoes of classic horror like Night of the Creeps and The Thing, especially in the creature design and the creeping sense of paranoia as the infection spreads.
The dialogue helps tie it all together. It’s sharp, sarcastic, and sometimes intentionally ridiculous in a way that fits the chaos happening on screen. One memorable line: “Where is the Mr. Pibb? I told your secretary to pack Mr. Pibb. It’s the only Coke I like. Goddamn Brenda exploding like a water balloon, worms driving my friends around like they’re goddamn skin-cars, people are spitting acid at me, turning you into cottage cheese, and now there’s no fucking goddamn Mr. Pibb?”
Even The Critics Kinda Liked It!
When it was released, Slither was reasonably well received by critics, who appreciated its creativity and throwback style. However, it didn’t perform well at the box office. Over time, though, it found its audience. It’s now considered a cult favorite, especially among fans of horror-comedy.

Is It Worth Watching Today?
Is Slither worth watching today? Sure, why not? The world’s gone to hell in a handbasket, so you might as well take time to entertain yourself in some spare moments. Slither might just help in that regard. If you enjoy over-the-top gore, strange creature design, and a mix of dark humor with horror, Slither is absolutely worth your time.
That said, it’s not for everyone. The film gets pretty intense in terms of visuals, and it doesn’t hold back on the gross-out factor. Still, if you can handle that, it’s a wild ride. And at the end of the day, it knows exactly what it is.
It’s just a movie. It might look real at times, but it’s all part of the fun.
Slither will celebrate its 20th Anniversary with a limited theatrical release on April 10, a 4K Digital release on May 1, and Special Edition Steelbook on May 18th, which can be preordered through HMV, ZAVVI, and Amazon!
