I’m a huge fan of indie slashers so I’m always excited to check out and review them. The latest indie slasher is Blood and Breakfast, which I had a blast with, and it’s not for the reason you would think.
Read on to find out why!
Blood and Breakfast was written and directed by Mark Byrne (One of One). The film stars Mel Heflin (Stirring), Matt Burns (The Only Ones), Brandy Lyn Dalton (The Legend of Crick Foot), Jeff Leinbach (Little Red Rosie), Rick Jermain (Milfs Versus Zombies), Morrigan Milam (XXXmas), Todd Bobenrieth (The Legend of Crick Foot), Michael Krysiewicz (A Hard Place), Lisa Neeld (Attack of the Radioactive Zombies), Jesse L Green (Killer Campout), Nancy Anne Ridder (Scream) and George Stover (Nightbeast).
What really did it for me here was the cast. They were excellent. I really enjoyed all the characters and their interactions together. We’ve got Natalie and Ken, a married couple that don’t get along too well, who run the B&B. Mike, who is in town on family business. Velouria and her bodyguard CB, who may also share a less than professional relationship. Kristie, a woman who narrowly avoided a serial killer because she had to work. The characters are just fun and their relationships together make Blood and Breakfast a really enjoyable experience. One of my favorite scenes in the movie involves Mike and a cam girl named Destiny, played wonderfully by Morrigan Milam. These is by far one of my favorite scenes in the movie and really doesn’t play out the way you would expect.
I really liked that the majority of the characters had all narrowly escaped a serial killer in the past and are having to contend with one again. It made the story interesting and really ups the stakes significantly. I really enjoyed the look of the killer, with the light up mask. It definitely gave them an unsettling presence. One of the things that really didn’t work for me were a lot of the kills. The way they were shot didn’t sit well with me and the gore wasn’t executed that well. There are some kills that really do work, though, and those more than make up for it.
Final Thoughts
Blood and Breakfast has some rough patches but as a whole is a really entertaining indie horror slasher film. The cast and characters are a lot of fun and really make the film a blast to watch. Recommended.
