Hammer Films’ re-imagining of the classic tale “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” simply titled Doctor Jekyll, is coming to digital platforms starting March 11. Doctor Jekyll was directed by Joe Stephenson and stars Eddie Izzard as the titular character, Dr. Nina Jekyll. It also stars Scott Chambers as Rob, whose full name turns out to be *wink wink, nudge nudge* Robert Louis Stevenson. I loved that little Easter egg, even if it is a bit on the nose.

Synopsis
An isolated mansion, a mysterious locked room, creepy corridors, a dusty cellar and a mad doctor… Hammer Horror is back! Dive into the haunting and enigmatic world of Doctor Jekyll.
This film tells the story of Dr. Nina Jekyll, pharmaceutical company mogul and granddaughter of Henry Jekyll. Nina Jekyll is afflicted with the same troubling issues which had affected the life, and death, of her grandfather, Henry. Namely, an evil alter-ego, Rachel Hyde, which takes over her body and mind with increasing frequency. Eddie Izzard is superb in the roles of both Nina Jekyll and Rachel Hyde making the characters distinguishable while still being subtle with the distinction. She makes it easy to imagine how live-in assistant Rob could be fooled into believing that nothing was amiss and that Nina Jekyll was exactly what she seemed.

I am absolutely thrilled to see this new entry from Hammer Films and I hope to see many more from them in the years to come. As soon as you get the chance. I strongly encourage you to check out Doctor Jekyll. Until then, check out Pop Horror’s retrospective of Hammer Films.
