PopHorror Let's Get Scared
Independent films allow for crossovers in the horror subgenres that we don’t often get with studio releases. For instance, what would you get if you crossed the cozy slasher Slumber Party Massacre with the paranormal vibes of Ouija: Origin Of Evil (read our review here)? We find out in Astronomic Studios’ newest film, Ouija Slumber Party.
Ouija Slumber Party is written by David C. Hayes (Rottentail 2018) and Edward Lee (Header 2006), and directed by Bobby Canipe Jr. (Night Of The Strangers 2025). It stars Mel Heflin (Darbie’s Scream House 2026), Morrigan Thompson (Crackcoon 2024), Penny Aphrodite (Orgy Of The Dead 2 2026), Ryan Martel (Coffintooth 2024), and Jessa Jupiter Flux (Deathwoods 2026).
It follows the story of a vlogger who brings three ladies into a reportedly haunted house to get ghostly footage and find a long-missing pile of cash. But every time a woman takes a shower in the fabled bathroom of the house, they wind up disappearing. This movie kicks off with lively credits and a catchy custom theme, letting the audience know they’re in for a good time.
Ouija Slumber Party is clearly influenced by 80s movies of its type, ala Night Of The Demons. We have sex-hungry bickering friends, a perverted troop leader, lingering scenes for the male gaze, and a human oiuja board. But the price of potential fame and riches unlocks a dark family history that sees a patrol of undead ladies waiting to come back to this side of the veil.
The isolated house makes a good setting, and the smaller rooms have individual lighting to set a tone for some of the horror sequences. Some of the characters are a bit thinly layered and it would’ve been nice to see a more grounded side and hear their “why” for joining in this dangerous conjuring. But this who’s who of indie horror queens seemed to really have fun playing off of each other, and some of the running gags (like the cooter kick) were quite funny.
Jessa Jupiter Flux gets to play Asenath, an empowered aristocrat who’s in control of the victims in the other dimension. Her tame demeanor and southern drawl make for a nice juxtaposition to the high energy cast. She leads her crew into battle against the intruders, and the bodies begin to pile up.
Ouija Slumber Party gives the audience the eye candy, blood, and carnage of a lot of the classics that came before it. You can buy the movie right now at https://srscinemastore.com.
