Denzel Whitaker Knows The Importance Of Nuance – The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster Actor Interview

While this interview is spoiler-free, I’m still going to tell you to see The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster if you haven’t already! And in case you missed the review, you can check it out here. What I appreciated about The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster was the nuance.

But in case you need a little catch-up, here’s the synopsis:

Vicaria is a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster thematically challenges our ideas of life and death. Bomani J. Story, the film’s writer and director, crafts a thrilling tale about a family that, despite the terrors of systemic pressure, will survive and be reborn again.

Nuance is so important in storytelling altogether, especially when dealing with certain themes. There are themes explored that oftentimes don’t do any justice to the fact that not all experiences are alike. And even in environments where you’d expect some of the same actions and outcomes, some of the characters in this world make some very different choices. There are so many layers to the human experience, but people often tend to reduce them to one or the other, good or bad, cruel or kind. For so many, there is no gray area.

Denzel Whitaker (The Purge TV Series 2019) plays one of the film’s antagonists, Kango. We caught up for a moment to talk about his role in The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster.

Check it out!

It really was a pleasure talking with Denzel about the process as well approach to bringing the complex character of Kango to life. Denzel has tremendous talent as an actor and I’m looking forward to seeing his work behind the camera as well!

The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster is available now in Theaters. It will also stream on ALLBlk and on Shudder at a later date.
