Ever love a film that everyone else hates and you can’t understand why? That’s how I feel about Jennifer’s Body. Released in 2009, Jennifer’s Body was written by Diablo Cody and directed by Karyn Kusama. The movie centers around a teenage friendship between Needy (Amanda Seyfried) and Jennifer (Megan Fox) that becomes strained when one of the girls is turned into a boy eating demon.
When this dark horror comedy was released, it instantly became one of my favorites. Unfortunately, everyone seemed to have a hate for this movie, and I felt like a closeted Nickleback fan. I had to live secretly with my love for Jennifer’s Body. It puzzled me as to why it was so disliked, as it has so many great attributes.
First, let’s talk about the cast, which is chock full of talent. It has Chris Pratt in it! Did you hear that? Chris Pratt! Unfortunately, he is not the Star-Lord we’ve come to know and love. He’s more like Wooderson from Dazed and Confused… alright, alright, alright! You may also notice Kyle Gallner all gothed up, who is super adorable as Colin. Oh, and we can’t forget about Adam Brody as Nikolai, the lead singer of the fictional band in the movie, Low Shoulder.
Now, let’s talk about the ladies in Jennifer’s Body. There are two memorable scenes between Amanda Seyfried and Megan Foxs’ characters. The first scene shows the love the girls have for each other, and the second one revels in the hate they have for each other. Both scenes take place in a bedroom… but you will have to watch the movie if you want to know more.
The film’s memorable script has some great one-liners that, on occasion, may still be used by me. Fortunately, there will be no sharing of these in this article, as I really feel they are best heard coming out of Megan Fox’s mouth.
Finally, there is the end credit sequence. Hole’s Courtney Love is wailing the lyrics to “Violet,” singing directly into my ’90s teenage heart. During these scenes, karma has caught up to the members of Low Shoulder, and they get what’s coming to them for their bloody crimes against poor Jennifer. Oh, sweet revenge! What glorious sites these scenes reveal! Let’s just say there will be no more live performances of the song, “Through the Trees.”
I hope I have convinced you to give Jennifer’s Body another watch. Maybe you’ll even realize that you love it as much as I do. Be part of a movement to stop the hate. Let us share in the beauty of Jennifer’s Body.
