‘Unbearing’ (2017) A Short Film Review

I never really babysat when I was younger. Or even now for that matter. For me, there is something rather unnerving about watching other people’s children. Especially for strangers. You can’t help but think of every worse case scenario.  Maybe the movie, When a Stranger Calls (1979) had something to do with it.

“Have you checked the children?”

That line still terrifies me to this day. I had the opportunity to watch the award-winning, short film Unbearing. Does this short provide some horrors? Read on to find out!

Jennifer Trudrung with Night Frizz Productions presents Unbearing. Directed by Aidan Weaver. Jennifer Trudrung also stars along with Mary Katherine O’Donnell, Jenna Goforth, and Reginal Heinish. This short film is about ten minutes and packs a lot of punch in a short amount of time.

The film starts with a young yet experienced babysitter, Lindsay, taking a last-minute babysitting job. The parents are middle aged newbie parents. The wife seems to be extra nervous about leaving her baby for the first time with a babysitter. The husband reassures her that it will be OK. They won’t be gone long. The babysitter reassures her as well that she is experienced. There are some red flags throughout this film, but the babysitter seems content with this short easy gig. The parents are adamant to not go into the baby’s room. They give her a video baby monitor. When asked about feeding a bottle, the mother’s answer is no you won’t need it. The parents leave and it is at this point that the suspense builds as Lindsay discovers the truth about this family.

This film, while you may have an idea of what is happening, still has tense build-ups to the end. Definitely some cringe-worthy moments, where I squirmed a little. It was uneasy to watch her find out what you know in your heart to be happening. The best part is the twist at the end. I didn’t see that one coming. The acting in this film is top notch. A lot of the tone of the film is set by the mannerisms of the parents along with the babysitter. Well played and believable.

Final Thoughts:

Unbearing is a short intense ride through a babysitter’s worst nightmare. You will think twice before watching anyone’s kids again. As previously mentioned, the performances are great! I love the intense build ups. This is what I love about good horror films. You aren’t sure exactly what is coming next, but you know it probably won’t be good. This film cemented my thoughts on babysitting. That’s a big nope! If you get a chance to see this film, please do! If you’ve seen it, let us know your thoughts.
