Tim Burton’s ‘PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE’ (1985): 40 Years Later

Tim Burton’s Pee Wee’s Big Adventure sits high on my film totem pole. I have loved this film since I was first able to put two and two together. I eventually came to understand its importance in my life. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is, I guess, what you could call a safe place for me. I was raised by my dad’s family. I faced some scary things as a child, and someone was always quick to sit my cousin and me down to watch this film; we were entranced.

Let’s get into the review.

Synopsis

Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) is an eccentric neighbor and down right annoying to some. His pride is his suped up biycicle, becoming the envy of a rich childlike man (Mark Holton) who woud pay any amount for Pee Wee’s bike No matter his love, his bike turns up missing, and could be anywhere in the world. After a hint that his bike in the “Alamo basement” Pee Wee takes the adventure of a lifetime to find his loving bike, meeting characters on his journey that help him see the lighter side of life in a stressful moment.

The Rundown

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure cast a few future icons in the world. Pee Wee fever was about to hit. Everyone in the movie was headed in a direction that was going to change their whole career. Tim Burton’s directorial debut already showed his style. It is silly, but it can also be pretty powerful in certain ways. Pee Wee Herman made it OK to be the oddball. Everything in this film clicked immediately for me. It was hilarious and even find of scary at a young age with some scenes such as Pee Wee’s nightmare. The scene is still kind of uncomfortable. I’m not afraid of clowns, but that scene just hits me somewhere hard.

A Movie We Needed

Everything made Pee Wee’s Big Adventure a crucial movie, from camera angles to the silly soundtrack. It was almost the perfect mix of everything I was into at the time, from monsters like Large Marge and the dreaded “Andy.” Every cast member of this film gave 110%. It didn’t matter if their role was small; they were still main characters. Such as Dottie (E.G. Daly), who only wants to profess her love for Pee Wee, eventually she gets her date when all is said and done. This is where Paul Reubens took the nation by storm on Saturday morning. After this film, his career skyrocketed. Everyone deserved an award just for being able to get down to Paul’s character. It was a different tone. You needed the perfect character lineup to pull the film off, and everyone understood the assignment.

Tell em’ Large Marge sent ya!

In The End

This film hits me in every way. I lived close to the Cabazon dinosaurs growing up, and seeing them in the chosen light for the film impressed me because if you have seen the actual dinosaurs at night, you will have a different experience. Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is like a memory-fueled ride into a comfort zone. Though many have tried, nothing they created, nothing hits like this film for me. Even Ernest wasn’t this funny and silly. Pee Wee’s big adventure is also a very clear view of being autistic. No one was afraid to get silly in the film. Even the biker gang Pee Wee runs into had their positive vibe in the end. No comedy can compare to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure for me; it’s a very special moment not only in cinematic value, but it still gives me a warm blanket to hide in while I enjoy this film.

On July 30th 2023, the world lost a kind soul. Our favorite weird character as both Pee Wee Herman and Paul Reubens; he was a well-rounded comedian who gave us all something to remember, the character he loved.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
