It’s fair to say that most people will never understand the hard cold or of living off your own kill and possibly starving if you don’t hunt. Evidently, Thordur Palsson’s film The Damned reveals things like that and more.
The film revolves around a small group of people in the 19th century that witness a terrible shipwreck. The group buries some of the dead and places some precautions on them as the group is incredibly superstitious of what may happen and what happens afterwards is frightening to say the least.
Let’s get started by saying that this film is appropriately creepy and frightening in its own narrative. It holds a certain realism that very few movies, nowadays, are able to capture since many studios are preoccupied with big-budget CGI overkill machines designed to be blockbusters and make money
This movie is something that demands to be seen and each edgy, tension-filled scene keeps the audience at the edge of their seat with such verve and spontaneity that it almost seems like a folktale that has been told centuries ago.
I must also give praise to Palsson’s direction as his atmospheric work has given the audience a reason to look forward to more of his work.
All in all, this dark movie harbours a subtle and convincing portrait of sailor superstitions and old wives tales.
The Damned releases on January 3, 2025! Be sure to check out our interview with director Thordur Palsson here!
