The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell – TV Review

If you are missing October and Halloween, then you definitely have to check out The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell on Netflix. It is as if Marilyn Munster lived on her own with a penchant for video blogging and her own fluffy, snarky monster pets. It is a bit of a scripted/how-to/baking show, and I love it. So, check out the reasons for my love of this original Netflix show!

Synopsis:

Part cooking show, part sitcom in the vein of The Addams Family and The Muppet Show set inside the enchanted home of Christine McConnell, who has attracted hundreds of thousands of social media followers with her creepy edible creations.

1. Christine McConnell Is An Amazing Artist

It is no surprise that Christine McConnell has attracted an entire fanbase via Reddit and Imgur with her creepy, edible creations. Her creativity can be seen in her edible yet eerie creations such as her concepts for the Alien: Covenant film.

2. Her Fellow Inhabitants

Christine and her spooky friends

The show isn’t just about Christine making cool, horror-related creations, but it also features her supernatural, hilarious companions. Rankle (Michael Oosterom: Sigmund and the Sea Monsters 2016) is a snarky, quick-witted, mummified ancient Egyptian cat. He has great one-liners like, “Snitches get gutted and sacrificed to Anubis.” Then there’s the gentle, hulky werewolf, Edgar (Mick Ignis: Stan Against Evil TV series, Drew Massey: The Happytime Murders 2018), and Bernard (Tim Lagasse: Oobi TV series, Between the Lions TV series), the monster who lurks in the basement. Vivienne (Dita Von Teese: The Death Of Salvador Dali 2005) is a ghost who inhabits Christine’s mirrors and gives her advice on getting a man. Lastly, there’s Rose (Colleen Smith: The Happytime Murders 2018), a reanimated raccoon that banters with Rankle and provides laughs all around. All of the monster puppets were created by The Henson Alternative, an offshoot of The Jim Henson Company.

3. Her Creations

Christine builds a monster version of her own home

Christine creates some of the most amazing and breathtaking innovations. In episode one, she made a cake version of her house with monstrous features. The details are just superb, from the piping to the monster eyes, all with clear piping gel to give it an almost realistic look. Now, I know I won’t be able to create anything like this, but it is fun to watch how it comes together. However, there are some crafts that are totally accomplishable, like the peppermint bark horns and the scary DIY candles.

4. Her Serial Killer Boyfriend

Christine and her beau, Norman

In episode 3, we are introduced to Norman (Adam Mayfield: In Tune With You 2012). Norman and Christine meet in a graveyard, prompting Rankle to assume that he is a serial killer. Although it is never said, the show sets Norman up as a psychotic butcher. There are certain things that he does that definitely screams, “Serial killer!” all in a hilarious way.

5. Rose

Miss Rose

I couldn’t leave Rose off this list. She is the inner trash panda in all of us. Rose is hilarious and has great one-liners like, “Brandy makes me randy!” She loves chocolate and brutally inhumane torture techniques. What’s not to love?

The Curious of Creations of Christine McConnell is currently streaming on Netflix. There is only one season so far, but here’s to hoping for a season 2. Check out the show and let us know what you think in the comments below!
