IT: Welcome To Derry

Why the New ‘IT’ Series on Max is a Bad Idea

As you may have heard by now, HBO Max, or Max, has greenlit a new project entitled It: Welcome to Derry and it is set to take place in the 1960s before the events of the first film. A lot of fans have expressed their excitement about the show but there are a lot of problems that could arise from this series that would make it a less-than-stellar idea.

For those that are unaware, the first IT movie came out in 2017 which took place in the late 1980s and the sequel took place closer to the present day. The frightening clown Pennywise, known as It, terrorizes a group of kids and they are forced to face the evil in a standoff by facing their worst nightmares.

We first got to know the evil clown that is Pennywise with these two movies. There were rumors and guesses as to where this monster came from but it was confirmed that he came to Earth many years ago in an asteroid and began haunting people and only to rise and go back to sleep every 27 years.

All of what we know from It was only glimpsed at from the second film, but it still made the audience curious about what this monster was. A TV series to expand on that may just ruin it.

A new series could, potentially, give more insight to the creature but it could also sully the legacy and terror of Pennywise by giving him an origin or plot that may not be in line with what was originally in the Stephen King novel. This has the potential to destroy the fabric of the character and thus make the audience lose respect in, not just the character, but also the series.

That’s just something to think about when watching the forthcoming series, which airs on Max in 2025.
