SXSW 2022 Midnight Shorts Review: Spenser Cohen’s ‘Blink’

I love horror shorts and I couldn’t wait to check out Blink for SXSW 2022’s Midnight Shorts selection. This horror gem comes from the studio, Scream Gems’ Horror Lab and was directed by Spenser Cohen. It was also co-written by Cohen and Anna Halberg. Blink stars Sophie Thatcher, Alicia Coppola, and Scot Nery.

Blink

Synopsis for Blink

After being violently pushed from a window, Mary wakes up in the hospital, almost completely paralyzed. Trapped inside the prison of her own body, Mary’s only way to communicate is by blinking her eyes. She tries to warn the nurse that a sinister, inhuman force is trying to kill her. But when strange things begin happening around her, she realizes it may be too late to stop it.

What can I say about Blink? Well, it’s one of best horror shorts I’ve seen this past year. It was creative, thrilling, unique, and captivating… all in the span of 10 minutes. That’s why I find shorts magical. I was enthralled by Mary’s story. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be completely paralyzed after experiencing something traumatizing, but fully aware of what happened yet not able to communicate beyond blinking. Sophie Thatcher was phenomenal and although she never expresses any words, her eyes say it all. You fear for her life.

One of the best parts about Blink was the awesome special effects. At one point, you can only see what is happening through the eyes of Mary. You’ll see what I mean when you watch it. It was such a cool and unique experience and made everything that more intense and dramatic. Although this was perfect as a short, I would love to see it made into a full-feature as I’m now fully invested!
