Samuel Vainisi’s 2018 Short ‘Breathe’ is Gut-Wrenchingly Perfect

Recently I had a chance to check out a disturbing new horror short called Breathe. I didn’t know much about it beyond the fact that I loved the beautiful artwork. Little did I know that this story would end up being a total mind fuck and leaves you questioning whether you should check into your local psych unit.

Beautiful Poster Art for Breathe!

This unnerving horror short was directed, written and produced by Samuel Vainisi. It has a killer cast starring Dominic Vainisi (Senses) and Alyss Winkler (Space Babes from Outer Space, Amazon Hot Box). Plus one of our very own PopHorror writers, Charlie Michael Cargile, helped co-produce this one!

Synopsis for Breathe

A young girl struggles with her anxiety and insomnia throughout the night. As hallucinations begin to flood her mind, a decision must be made as each passing second becomes too overwhelming and she must remind herself to just – breathe.

I’m not familiar with Samuel’s previous work, but I will say that I was impressed by Breathe and look forward to what he comes out with in the future. In less than 12 minutes, he delivers a psychologically disturbing story that will send chills down your spine. The cinematography was well shot and edited. I also really dug the special effects and makeup. It was important for it a certain to look real and horrifying and without the work of great FX it wouldn’t have been as memorable or effective.

Alyss Winkler’s delivers a performance unlike any of her other films and it’s beautiful. I’m a huge fan of her work and you get to see a different side of her in this – a more vulnerable and complex character. She kills it in every scene and as she’s losing her own mind makes you question your own sanity.

The end totally surprised me. I didn’t see it coming at all and I was like “Wait. What? Oh shit!!!” Once you get to that point there’s no turning back and your invested until the end. You must see what happens.

Final Thoughts:

As a reviewer, I’ve watched enough films and shorts to know when someone worked really hard on a project and I can tell Samuel Vainisi did this with Breathe. He had something to say and he chose to tell it in this powerful gut-wrenching story that makes you think outside the box.
