Sadly, Shelley Duvall has passed away at the age of 75. She was a prolific and eccentric actress, probably best known to horror fans for playing Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, The Shining based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. She made her return to film after nearly two decades in the 2023 horror film, The Forest Hills. You may read our spoiler free review HERE. Let’s take a look back at the talented Shelley Duvall and some of her more memorable roles.
Suzanne – Brewster McCloud (1970)
This was Shelley’s first film role in Robert Altman’s black comedy Brewster McCloud. She was discovered at a party by talent scouts and Altman wanted to cast her as Suzanne. In total, Shelley and Robert worked together seven times.
Pam – Annie Hall (1977)
Shelley played another quirky character, Pam, a Rolling Stone reporter, who dates Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) in Annie Hall. A brief but memorable performance.
Millie Lammoreaux- 3 Women (1977)
Shelley played Millie Lammoreaux in this Robert Altman film. She plays a lonely and socially awkward spa owner. She is roommates with Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek) and the relationship between them is both interesting and complex.
Dame Pansy – Time Bandits (1981)
Shelley played a mysteriously ageless Dame Pansy in Time Bandits (1981). This is one of my favorites of hers that doesn’t get enough love.
Olive Oyl – Popeye (1980)
Shelley played Popeye’s (Robin Williams) beloved girl flawlessly in this Robert Altman film.
Wendy Torrance – The Shining (1980)
Shelley is the perfect Wendy Torrance. I don’t care that others may say no. She gave the best performance in Stanley Kubrick’s film.
I also feel that not enough love is given to her Faerie Tale Theatre series that ran from 1982-1987. This was such a great series with many famous actors in it. Here is a trailer. Brings back memories!
Shelley Duvall is known for quirky and eccentric roles. Undeniably talented and at times an underrated actress, in my opinion. These are just some of the memorable roles she gave us. She truly was a unique talent and will be remembered for years to come. Thank you Shelley for sharing your talent with us in so many memorable roles.
