R.T. Thorne’s story about what happens when humans dwell on hope without food. It’s a well-thought-out idea and an original take on what would happen when the food stops. How far will we go to survive? At first, I thought 40 Acres was just another run-of-the-mill action/ thriller. I was wrong, and I turned the movie off, pondering what I had just seen. I found it hard to believe an action movie would pull me right in.
Let’s get into the review.
Synopsis
In a post-apocalyptic world with food scarcity, a Black family of Canadian farmers descended from American Civil War migrants defend their homestead against cannibals trying to seize their resources.
R.T. Thorne directed the film. It stars Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Greyeyes, Kataem O’Connor, and Milcania Diaz-Rojas.
Realism
This isn’t far off from the truth. When all the animals suddenly die, where would we find food? Would put in the middle of a war just to survive. I imagine that at this point, you wouldn’t even be able to trust your neighbors. 40 Acres puts you in a very uncomfortable place in a bunch of “What if?” moments. That is the part that excited me the most. I expected so much worse from the preview. I didn’t quite understand the point of the film. However, I took the bait and I got completely hooked. 40 Acres was a film set in the back of our minds. Slowly, you start to realize that it may be more than just a film; perhaps it is a warning.
We are a race that has taken advantage of the food chain. No one thinks twice about wearing fur or eating alligator jerky. We became very selfish, condemning others who choose not to eat meat. Maybe we shouldn’t serve 72-ounce steaks in a contest to see how gluttonous we really are. 40 Acres calmed my nerves, knowing I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. Food is a silly privilege that we won’t notice the miracle of why it exists.
My hat’s off to anyone above the rim when it comes to meat. If you can stay true to your plant diet, you have a much better chance of surviving a famine. I have a very strong feeling that people would quickly try giving soy a chance. In other news, you could just turn out to be a cannibal. You can justify eating kids who don’t put up a fight. I know personally, as much as I love gore and horror, I will totally pass on eating a person. To me, going without and creating food from the ground again.
In The End
I took a lot away from 40 Acres, but the most important part was seeing the disgrace of our race. I enjoyed every moment of this film because it spoke to me. Of course, I eat meat, but not in massive amounts. It isn’t my diet, although I love a good burger, but some people take it too far. I think I would be doing trade like in 40 Acres because everyone has something useful, even if it’s a little weed or alcohol to pass the time. When Earth decides to collect on all the damage we have done, only the strong and knowledgeable could survive without eating people.
It hits theaters July 2, 2025.
