PopHorror Interviews Agata Maszkiewicz, Costume Designer Behind Netflix’s ‘Lucifer’

PopHorror recently had the opportunity to chat with Agata Maszkiewicz about her work as a costume designer on the hit Netflix series, Lucifer. This is show that everyone is talking about and the costumes are to die for! In this interview you will learn about her career, how she got involved with costume design, her inspiration behind the clothes/costumes for Lucifer, upcoming projects, and more!

Agata Maszkiewicz

PopHorror – Hi Agata. It’s great to chat with you! How has 2021 treated you so far?

Agata Maszkiewicz – Thank you for having me, so far so good.

PopHorror – Great to hear! How long have you been a costume designer?

Agata Maszkiewicz – I have been a costume designer for the past 17 years.

PopHorror – Wow that’s a long time! Is this something you always wanted to do?

Agata Maszkiewicz – Well, I grew up in Poland and honestly, it never crossed my mind that costume design could be an actual career. I studied at a high school for the arts and began learning different artistic techniques in those years, but I always had a passion and love for fashion. I enjoyed designing clothes as well and I made most of my own clothing growing up. By the time I was done with school, my father was living in the U.S. and it was his idea that I join him in Los Angeles to study fashion, and that’s how I ended up at the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising. While I was in school I decided that I wanted to become a costume designer.

PopHorror – That’s awesome. How did you get involved with Netflix’s hit series, Lucifer?

Agata MaszkiewiczLucifer was making a move to Netflix and was in need of a costume designer. I had worked with producers Ildy Modrovich and Hilton Smith in the past on different projects and they called me up and luckily I was available at the time. It was happy timing.

PopHorror – Can you please tell us how you brought these characters to life with their amazing wardrobe?

Agata Maszkiewicz – When I joined the show the characters were already very much alive, and I helped them continue on their journey. I joined the show after some pretty big shakeups for the characters: Chloe learned that Lucifer is really the Devil, Eve arrives, Maze goes on a self-discovery mission in search of a soul and Dr. Linda gets pregnant with an angel baby, so there was a lot going on for everyone. Inbar Lavi, who plays Eve, and I were both new to the show and both received a very warm embrace from everyone. With Eve being a new character I had the opportunity to bring her to life. It was a very conscious decision to document Eve’s character development with color progression. It was actually Inbar’s idea that we should meet Eve for the first time in a white dress; she was new to the world and white symbolized a fresh start. From there as we got to know the character better and she got to know herself better we added more and more of the red tones. I guess I could say we ombréd her character into being. Tom was also such a joy to work with, there’s just something so wonderful about a handsome man in a beautiful suit; all of his suits and tuxedos were custom made for him. I also loved being there with Chloe when she was trying to find her footing in the new reality where the real Devil runs the nightclub. I showed her vulnerability by picking softer shades and shapes in the beginning of season 4. And of course, I had a really fun time dressing Maze; because she wears mostly black I used a lot of textures and interesting silhouettes to give her looks dimension on camera. I not so secretly wish that her closet was my own!

PopHorror – Thanks for all in-depth look into the series. What inspired this style of clothing?

Agata Maszkiewicz – Inspiration comes from all over for me but mostly I love checking out different street-style Instagram accounts. It’s wonderful to see how people express their individuality through clothing and then try and bring some elements of that authentic style to the characters we create.

PopHorror – Are you happy with the success of the show?

Agata Maszkiewicz – Of course, it’s always so nice when shows I work on are appreciated, especially in this case. Lucifer was a lovely show to be a part of and it was a very special group of people, I miss them a lot.

PopHorror – You should be proud and I bet! If you could work on any type of film or show in the future, is there any type of wardrobe you’d love to do that you haven’t done yet?

Agata Maszkiewicz – I would love to do a show set in the Victorian era. The Age of Innocence is one of my all-time favorite films and every time I come across it I can’t help but stop everything and watch it. I would also love to do a show set in 1930s Los Angeles and recreate that time of Old Hollywood glamour.

PopHorror – That would be so cool. I love those eras as well. Any upcoming projects you’d like to talk about?

Agata Maszkiewicz – I just started working on a new show for Disney+ called National Treasure.

PopHorror – Thanks for your time, Agata. I look forward to all your upcoming projects!
