I’ve had the privilege of interviewing a plethora of people in the horror community. That being said, I haven’t had a chance to talk with many young and talented stars. That’s why I was humbled to finally chat with Chalet Brannan, the star of the upcoming horror film, Crepitus.
Although young, Chalet has shown she is force to be reckoned with. She already 87 acting credits under her name on IMDb, and it’s growing all the time. Read on to learn more about her career, her inspirations, her character in Crepitus, what it was like to work with Bill Moseley and more!
Chalet Brannan
PopHorror – Thanks for talking with me, Chalet! How did you get involved in the film industry?
Chalet Brannan – Thank you! I started out modeling when I was 6 years old and enjoyed it and found it was fun and exciting. The travel was really exciting to me – going to different places just to be photographed.
PopHorror – I bet! What was the first film you ever did?
Chalet Brannan – Well, for serious work, I would have to say The Sparrows: Nesting starring Kevin Sorbo, Judy Norton, and Christopher Atkins. It’s about a little girl named Bella Sanchez – played by me – and her family’s struggles. In this film, which is on Netflix, I actually had to cry, and there are several scenes that I think you will cry tears and laugh, too. It was my first real film, and I was nominated as a Best Supporting Lead at 9 years of age.
PopHorror – Oh, wow! I will check it out soon! Your newest film, Crepitus, is gaining popularity every day. How did you get involved with that film?
Chalet Brannan – My dad actually was looking at it from a producer’s standpoint, since he is a producer. I remember he asked me if I thought I could play Sam, even though it was for a boy at that time. I said sure, because a film coming out right now that will be on 5 airlines, TV and shown around the world also had called for a little boy named Dylan, and I auditioned and the producers awarded me the role. So I thought, “Okay, I can do this again.” The rest is history. I tried out and made it.
PopHorror – Can you relate to your character at all?
Chalet Brannan – Yes, just a little. I am very talkative, and Sam is, too. She is scared a lot sometimes, but that does not stop her from being nosy. That’s me. I don’t really let things get in the way, once I see something I want to know about. Sam is that way in the film. She may show she is afraid of certain things, but her mind is made up on those things, too. She wants to know the what, the who, the how and the why. That’s me.
PopHorror – A sign of intelligence! Did you find the story frightening?
Chalet Brannan – Anytime there is a clown that is weird and scary, it’s frightening. Anytime there is a cannibalistic clown, it’s even worse. Yes, the casket, the alter, everything that you see in the movie is going to scare you. I watched IT with my dad, and let me tell you, this [clown] is a LOT scarier than Pennywise – pun intended.
PopHorror – (Laughs) I can’t wait to see it! What was it like working with Bill Moseley?
Chalet Brannan – It was really cool! Since I don’t know a lot of people from this genre, it was a great chance to meet someone who actually does mostly horror. He was a very, very nice man in person, but he sure did scare me on set… only with the clown suit on though. I really enjoyed working with him, and I learned a lot from him. Hopefully someday, we can make a sequel or prequel, and I can work with him again.
PopHorror – I hope so! Do you have any on-set or off-set fun memories you’d like to talk about?
Chalet and Caitlin on the set of Crepitus
Chalet Brannan – Well, if we are talking this film, then yes. Caitlin Williams – my sister in the film – and I had a lot of fun on set. I think we scared each other many times, even doing the lines. She is a lot of fun to be around and if I had a sister – I only have a brother – I’d want one to be like her.
PopHorror – February was Women in Horror Month. You may be young, but your talent shows you have a bright future. Do you have any favorite actresses?
Chalet Brannan – Yes. Dakota Fanning is my favorite. She is not only a great actress, but she also went to college and put her education before filming. That shows character.
PopHorror – I agree. Would you ever want to direct a film?
Chalet Brannan – I believe yes, I would love to. I am now starting, even at my age, to look and see what goes on behind the cameras, to do some editing. I have even studied scripts and how to write. Someday, I will write my own movie about my life, and how I beat cancer at 10 years old. It will be from the start to finish of my life and how it went. I want people to see that, and to be amazed and empowered to do more with their life.
PopHorror – You’re truly inspiring, Chalet. Good look in all your endeavors!
