Justin M. Seaman’s ‘THE BARN’ (2016) – Retro Review

Lately, there have been many movies celebrating the 80s horror movement. Most, I have to admit, aren’t that good. However, The Barn is one of those fantastic movies. It reminds me of all those monsters I loved so much. It starts almost immediately with *TRIGGER WARNING* a little kid falls victim to the barn monsters. I found this movie a few months ago on Tubi; it just looked like my style from the feature image. I wasn’t wrong.

The Last Halloween

Synopsis

It’s Hallowen 1989 and Sam (Mitchell Mulsolito) and Josh (Will Stout) are on their last year of trick or treating. they love playing pranks, especially on Ms. Barnhart (Linnea Quigley) and this time they go too far. When Sam’s dad gets a call from an agitated Ms. Barnhart, he assures Sam that this will be his last Halloween. The boys make it a night to die for. After hearing about a free concert on Dr. Rocks (Ari Lehman) show, they make it their goal to get there. Along the way they make a wrong turn and end up in front of a creepy barn. After following a ritual, the group awakens the ancient evil inside.

The Boogey Man, Hallowed Jack and Candy Corn Scarecrow are unleashed and are coming back with a goal of killing everyone in town. It’s up to the group to save themselves, and each other. Eventually they 3 monsters make their way all around, eneding up in a roller rink party. A blood fest takes over while the group watches helplessly. Who will survive?

Linnea Quigley as Ms. Barnhart

What makes the movie so great is the bad acting, which was supposed to be that way. It entrances me to see how off-track they get while filming. These are some of my favorite slashers because they look so terrifying. I think The Boogeyman is my favorite character in the entire cast. He had the best kills and an indestructible nature. The crew for the film nailed it on their 80s-style sets or filming locations. I felt like a kid again, with legendary people involved in horror movies for a long time.

The Barn is precisely what we elder fans have been looking for all these years. It is a tribute to the greatest generation ever. The storyline is highly humorous, especially with how over-the-top it is. Some people don’t like splatter movies, but they are my lifeline to escape all the nonsense in my life. The Barn fills a void I had been missing for a long time. It gave me hope for future directors and the horror genre on the same level as Terrifier.

The Barn is an excellent moment for movies that fly under the radar. It has been for years. The genre and its side chicks will always be in my heart.

In The End

Take it from me: you will enjoy this movie for all its worth! Don’t miss your chance to see this work of art. Come in with an open mind. Don’t expect Oscar-winning performances. Have fun with it because it’s a fun movie the entire time you watch it. You won’t have to worry about a complex story; it’s easy to remember. The Barn will have my stamp of approval. There is even a fake commercial for the video game, which, sadly, is not accurate either.

You can watch The Barn for free on Tubi; and the sequel is available on YouTube.
