GetAWAY

Movie Review: ‘GetAWAY’ (2020) Is An Interesting Meta-Horror Slasher

I’m always down for a slasher and the retro poster and trailer for GetAWAY had me intrigued. This film was directed by Blayne Weaver and stars Emma Norville, Danielle Carrozza, Kyle Mangold, Franchesca Contreras, Joshua Cody, and Jon Rust.

Synopsis for GetAWAY

Devastated by a sudden break-up, young actress Maddie needs a getaway from campus to help mend her broken heart. Her best friend lands her a role in the student slasher flick shooting this weekend at a camp deep in the Virginia forest. It’s the perfect place to unwind, but no matter how far into the woods she goes, her problems keep sneaking up behind her. Before the film’s crew can shoot their first frame, their production gains an unwelcome new crew member…and he’s out for blood! Props go missing, equipment is stolen, and the bodies pile up. A crazed maniac has zeroed in on the students of this film class, but nothing is truly as it seems in GetAWAY.

I really enjoy meta-horror films and GetAWAY was enjoyable and surprisingly not predictable. It’s a fun little slasher story with a bunch of idiotic characters who are attempting to make their own horror movie that ends up fatal. It has a twisted ending and some blood splatter as to be expected.

None of the characters are really enjoyable, which means you don’t really care if they live or die. That’s quite common in slasher films, though. The acting is a bit over the top and cheesy, but it fit the tone and atmosphere of the film so it worked.

My favorite part about the GetAWAY was the slasher’s look. I loved it from the moment I saw the poster. Scarecrow masks always freak me out and the one used in this film was super creepy. It made up for the kills being rather weak.

GetAWAY

Although it has some flaws, the film has some enjoyable moments. My biggest complaint is that for a slasher film the kills weren’t very creative or memorable. GetAWAY is now available on VOD, so if you like slasher films, give it a shot and let us know what you think.
