Jamie Robert MacDougall’s ‘Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back’ (2021) – No Budget Filmmaking At Its Finest – Movie Review

Yes, you read that right. The name of this movie is Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back. And it’s just as glorious as you imagine.

Jamie Robert MacDougall’s raunchy horror comedy is a no-budget project that was filmed during the apocalypse… er, I mean pandemic. Many of the actors shot the footage themselves with cell phones or personal cameras from their own homes across both the US and Canada. Starring Jonathan Tiersten (Last American Horror Show Vol. II 2020), Malvolia: The Queen of Screams series’ Erik Anthony Russo and Robert Bess, Amy Ellen Holbrook, Mike Ferguson (Moon Of The Blood Beast 2019 – read our review here), Michael Ochotorena, Malvolia: The Queen of Screams herself, Jennifer Nangle (Slit 2016 – read our review here), Shawn C. Phillips (13 Slays Till X-Mas 2020 – read our review here), Avery Crumley, Sheri Davis (read our interview with her here), April Love, Aneiszka Sea, and Todd “Quality” Jaeger, the movie is in black and white with picture quality fluctuating like the old horror, movies so bad they’re good, cult, drive-in favorites. The special FX were created by Jamie Robert MacDougall, Mike Ferguson, and Erik Anthony Russo.

What Works

I will warn you now… there are penises everywhere in this film! If you have an aversion to male genitalia, you might want to give this one a pass.

When hitting Play on a movie called Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back, you expect to experience certain things. First of all, there has to be comedy. Real comedy, too, not that canned laughter junk. You also want to see gratuitous violence, awkward situations, and plenty of nekkidness. Did the film deliver? Yes! On all accounts. My favorite scene is a conversation between Mr. Hernandez (Russo) and Theresa Lopez (Nangle) about Rocco’s (Ferguson), uh, girth. The rapport between Theresa and Hernandez is perfect. Those three actors work wonderfully together. And then we’ve got other personalities, like Uncle Leo (Jaeger), the long-suffering newspaper editor, his girl Sadie (Holbrook), Mayor Bobbie Ewing (Davis), news correspondent Misty Meadows (Love) and her man on the scene, Dash Styles (Phillips).

Jenn Nangle shines as pop star Theresa Lopez, a singer who just wants to get on stage and sing. Mike Ferguson’s over-the-top henchman, Rocco, had me rolling on the floor. He really is a national treasure. You can just feel the anger and frustration rolling off of Michael Ochoterena’s Ace. You seriously don’t want to mess with this guy.

Off topic, but is that Shawn C. Phillip’s real movie collection? He has some great films in there! I saw Dog Soldiers and DeadGirl, two of my favorites. But I digress.

The gore in Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back is fantastic! Body parts get bitten off, chewed through, and spat out with increasing regularity. The toilet zombie baby himself is a nasty piece of work, attacking from all angles and ready to chomp on just about anything. He’s gross, snarky, and he fits in the smallest places. Be careful where you sit!

What Doesn’t Work

I do realize that Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back is a no-budget operation that was filmed by each actor without a director standing over them to lead them in the right direction. Considering that, I have to say that the actors involved, especially the newcomers, did a great job. I do have to admit that the film could have been edited down a bit. There are quite a few scenes that track just a little too long. It almost gets to the point where you’re thinking, “Okay, I get it.” But this is something that can be attributed to a first time feature length filmmaker.

There are some sound issues as well. There are entire dialogue scenes that I couldn’t really hear at all. This could be a fault on my end, but it is something I noticed, so I wanted to mention it.

Final Thoughts

Toilet Zombie Baby Strikes Back is a funny, cheesy, nasty addition to the dark comedy horror genre. I’m impressed with MacDougall’s idea of filming everything virtually, and I think the end result is fabulous!
