I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Niki Koss, the star of the new horror thriller Dreamcatcher (read our review – HERE). This film is quite different from anything I’ve seen before, and Niki delivers a killer performance. Learn about her career, her character in Dreamcatcher, upcoming projects, and more!
PopHorror – It’s great to chat with you, Niki. What inspired you to get involved in the filmmaking business?
Niki Koss – You too! I’ve wanted to be in the filmmaking business for as long as I can remember. I was making movies on my little camcorder throughout my whole childhood. I’ve always loved watching films and when I found out I could make them for a living there was no turning back.
PopHorror – Well you’re great at it! Are there any actresses who you look up to?
Niki Koss – Greta Gerwig and Olivia Wilde. Find a gal that can do both!
PopHorror – Love them both! You’ve played in a few different horror films. Do you enjoy the horror genre and if so what are some of your favorite horror movies?
Niki Koss – I love acting in horror movies, but I’m not really a big fan of watching them. I’m such a scaredy-cat! If I had to pick one though, I’d say The Shining. It’s a classic and the perfect amount of scary for me.
PopHorror – Good choice! Your newest film is Dreamcatcher. Can you tell the viewers what the film is about?
Niki Koss – Dreamcatcher is about a group of friends who attend an EDM concert one night, only to find out that they are essentially trapped in a nightmare of violence and mayhem.
PopHorror – How did this role come about for you?
Niki Koss – I read for it and went through the basic auditioning motions; chemistry reads, callbacks, producer sessions, etc. I read with Travis Burns during our chemistry read and that felt like it sort of sealed the deal for both of us.
PopHorror – You were fantastic! Can you tell us about your character, Pierce?
Niki Koss – Pierce is a really complicated person. She has a tragic backstory filled with all kinds of pain that she will do anything to keep locked away. She does anything she can to avoid her feelings, which oftentimes leads to her making some not-so-great decisions. She’s sensual, sarcastic, independent, and always says what is exactly on her mind.
PopHorror – Agreed, Pierce is definitely a bit of a troubled wild child. Could you relate to her at all?
Niki Koss – I can relate to her in a lot of ways, but the wild child aspect not so much. I was never really a big party girl. I’m honestly kind of a grandma stuck in a 27-year-old’s body. Although, her fierce independence is definitely something we have in common.
PopHorror – Haha I feel that! This film has a lot of twists and turns. Do you think viewers will be surprised?
Niki Koss – I think so! I was definitely surprised when reading it the first time. There were even a few twists I forgot about when I watched it almost a year later that shocked me as well. It will definitely keep you on your toes.
PopHorror – Very true! Do you have any favorite scenes without spoiling anything?
Niki Koss – I love the scene where my character goes on a drug trip. It was so much fun to film and I think it turned out great. Jacob’s vision for it was really cool and unique.
PopHorror – That was pretty awesome. One of my favorites. Any other projects you would like to talk about?
Niki Koss – I have my first feature that I directed, Night Night, starring Brenna D’Amico coming out this year. It’s a psychological thriller about a woman determined to prove her sanity in a world where everything seems to be working against her.
PopHorror – Thanks again, Niki! Your new feature sounds great and if you want any coverage for Night Night, you can hit me up and I’ll be happy to support your film and anything else you do.
Dreamcatcher hits theaters, On Digital, and Demand on March 5, 2021, from Samuel Goldwyn Films. If you dig a mystery with bizarre twists and turns along the way, check this one out!
