Interview With Lulu Wilson, Star Of ‘The Wrath Of Becky’

Back in 2020 a little indie film called Becky swept through the horror genre and took it by storm. Starring Lulu Wilson and Kevin James, Becky was all anyone talked about, urging horror fans and anyone who would listen to check out this gem of a film. Becky was an unlikely hero; a teenage girl slicing and dicing her way through a bunch of rogue convicts who turned her quiet vacation with her father on its head. With a strong female character leading the way through practical effects and vicious kills, Becky earned its spot as top horror film of the year.

Now horror fans are in for a real treat – a sequel that no one saw coming but is everything we needed. Picking up two years after Becky survived the attack on her family, The Wrath of Becky follows our unlikely hero as she sets out on a mission to save her dog, Diego, from a group of “Nobel Men,” leaving blood and carnage in her wake.

To celebrate the release of the sequel, I chatted via Zoom with star Lulu Wilson about being Becky again, why she loves horror, her fear of being kidnapped, what’s up next, and more!

PopHorror: The Wrath of Becky was so amazing! It’s very rare that a sequel lives up to the original and this one did not disappoint. I’m super excited to speak with you.

Lulu Wilson: Thank you!

PopHorror: What made you want to say yes to the sequel?

Lulu Wilson: Oh my god. I wanted to say yes, no matter what it was, honestly. Just to be able to play Becky again was amazing, and it was so exciting for me when they first came to me, being like, “Okay, there’s a second one!” I was immediately down no matter who was involved. I knew they would attach the right people. I just wanted the opportunity to be Becky again. She’s one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played. And also having the opportunity to develop her character more and be in on all the creative process with Matt and Suze (writing/directing duo Angel and Coote – read our interview here) was really special to me.

PopHorror: What was it like to step back into that role and world that Becky lives in?

Lulu Wilson: It was really special because I was able to drop that teen angst that she had in that first movie and show her more… I don’t know if I’d say mature but the person she is now after these two years, and to show the audience and the people watching who and what she’s become and how she’s been training. She’s not going to let that shit happen again and she’s not going to run away from anything. She’s going to run towards. It was also really fun to be able to tie in some dark comedy aspects to this one and a real comic book vibe. Matt and Suze were so down to do that and they executed it really well I think.

PopHorror: I do too, and I love a strong female character, and I especially love one that’s kicking ass. Also a dog mom. That was the best.

Lulu Wilson: I know!

PopHorror: It was like John Wick with a teenager without having to kill the dog.

Lulu Wilson: John Wick but better, one may say. I’m a huge animal person, like crazy animal person so it was really fun being able to work with the dog. And Pac, who played Diego, was the sweetest little puppy ever. I want a Cane Corso like more than anything in the world. Also just being that young female character kicking major ass was amazing because you don’t see that very often and I know it’s not like the typical movie you take your kids to, but I think young girls need to see this movie to see that they can kick some Nazi ass.

PopHorror: Yeah, absolutely. I did speak with Matt and Suzanne earlier this week and the first thing I said was, “Thank you for not killing the dog.”

Lulu Wilson: Yes! I totally agree. I feel like it also would have taken so many people out of it because I’m not into animals dying in movies at all, and I stood by the fact that I did not. And Suze was dead set on not having the dog die, and I think all of us were very glad that he did not.

PopHorror: She said, “Not in my movie!” I would have been so pissed.

Lulu Wilson: That’s her family. That’s the last member standing of her family. She’s gotta have her dog sidekick.

PopHorror: This is not your first foray into horror. I’ve been following your career since the beginning with Annabelle: Creation, and my favorite, which is Ouija: Origin of Evil, and of course Becky. What draws you to horror?

Lulu Wilson: That’s a good question. I’ve always been really into watching horror movies. My dad and my oldest sister would go every Friday night to see horror movies when I was really little and I always wanted to be in on that. Horror movies I feel like are some of the most creative movies out there because you’re creating these monsters, these demons, these ghosts and that takes some real imagination, some really talented people to be able to execute something so otherworldly and make it seem so real. Especially today with these A24 horror movies that are coming out, they’re just developing more and more. At first I just kind of fell into the genre because I was this little blonde girl in the white nightgown that was being chased by a demon typecast but now I have a real appreciation for it. I would love to be a part of even more horror movies.

Lulu Wilson in Anabelle: Creation.

PopHorror: That is the best answer ever. I’m really glad to hear that. I love it when people find the genre because their parents introduced them to it. That’s always the best to hear. What do you think your weapon of choice would be in a zombie apocalypse?

Lulu Wilson: Oh my god. Okay, so I fence, so I think maybe a sword. But also, when I was little I used to carry a hammer around with me because I was worried that I was going to get kidnapped so maybe a hammer. Like a hammer and a sword.

PopHorror: You used to carry a hammer because you were afraid you were going to get kidnapped? Did you have a reason why you were afraid?

Lulu Wilson: Okay, this is a good story. I’m from New York, and my mom let me wander from a very young age. Whenever I left the house she would tell me not to get kidnapped and because of that I assumed that everybody at least once in their life got kidnapped. I just thought it was a thing so I was ready. And I still am. The whole entire filming of The Wrath of Becky I slept with a knife under my pillow. Fun fact.

Lulu Wilson in The Wrath of Becky.

PopHorror: Oh that is a great story, thank you! I’m glad I asked that because that’s really interesting. What is up next for you?

Lulu Wilson: I have an episode of Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher coming out in September. I’m in the first episode of that. And right now I’m in New Mexico filming a sci-fi movie called Xeno. It’s Kevin Hart’s production company and The Jim Henson Company, which is so sick! It’s such an amazing film so far. I’m working all night tonight and I can’t wait for people to see it.

PopHorror: That’s so exciting! Like I said, I’ve been following your career and I love seeing you growing in your career and blossoming as an actor. I’m excited to see what you have coming up.

Lulu Wilson: Thank you!

PopHorror: Just one last question for you today. What’s your favorite scary movie?

Lulu Wilson: Barbarian. I went two nights in a row to the theater to see it.

Thank you so much to Lulu for taking the time to speak with us. You can catch The Wrath of Becky in theaters now!
