Huluween Film Fest: Chelsea Lupkin’s ‘Flagged’ (2019)

Have you ever had something you posted on social media reported or flagged for its content? I’m going to assume that most of us have been held captive in Facebook jail at least once. Have you ever wondered who has the job of reviewing the content to confirm whether it goes against the platform’s standards? Neither have I! But now, we’re about to find out in Flagged.

Flagged is one short film featured on Hulu’s Huluween Film Fest, and was brought to us by writer and director Chelsea Lupkin (click here to check out our review of her fantastic short film, Lucy’s Tale). The film spotlights a young woman named Mila (Samantha Bartow: Patient 1642 2018) on her first day as a content moderator for a social media platform. She quickly realizes that the job description lacked a few details… but it’s too late! Tensions rise as Mila stays late at the office, watching atrocities play out before her eyes.

Clocking in a little over 7 minutes, the pacing of this film is executed perfectly. Lupkin introduced supporting roles with enough time to interact with Mila, unfolding her character thoughtfully. Even with minimal dialogue between the characters, emotions are planted with effective musical scores and lighting. The one thing that I absolutely love about short films is that they leave viewers sitting at the edge of their seats, itching for more. Flagged is a prime example of this. There’s creativity made here that influences viewers to let their imaginations run with the questions that form while watching. I, for one, would love to see a full-length feature film spotlighting this concept, especially with so many other movies that have focused on the terrors brought on by social media.
