GenreBlast Film Festival 2023: ‘Project Eerie’ – Movie Review

Those who know me best know how much I dearly love the found footage horror genre. From The Taking of Deborah Logan to The Last Exorcism, some of my favorite horror films of all time fall into this category. So I was very excited to try a new film showing at the GenreBlast Film Festival 2023 directed by Ricky Umberger (The Fear Footage) called Project Eerie.

Synopsis:

On Halloween 2020, Jesse and Jacob Warner disappeared while live streaming on social media. This is that live stream.

Project Eerie is set up a lot like the V/H/S/ series, where two boys break into an abandoned house and find a mysterious envelope labeled Project Eerie with a videotape inside. They play it, and it shows a father and his toddler daughter on a camping trip where they meet quite possibly the worst park ranger ever.

The film continues on with other stories, although I will say that none of them really hit as hard as the first one. Director Ricky Umberger is terrific as the desperate father – definitely the best actor of the bunch.

While I would not call this the best found footage film ever, it’s a solid effort. There were a few genuinely scary scenes, the practical effects were solid, and the camera work kept the integrity of the the genre without being ‘too shaky.’ This is one that die hard fans of the genre will want to catch for sure, but any fan of low budget films will also want to watch it!

Project Eerie debuted at the GenreBlast Film Festival 2023 over the weekend. Stay tuned to PopHorror.com for more release information as it comes out!
