Fantastic Fest 2019 Review: ‘Homewrecker’ is Delightfully Unexpected

Fantastic Fest 2019 is up there as one of the best festivals I’ve ever had the honor of covering and it truly has some amazing films. One of the first films I watched was the horror/thriller comedy, Homewrecker and it was quite the experience.

The film was directed by Zach Gayne. It was co-written by Precious Chong and Alex Essoe who also star in the film alongside Kris Siddiqi.

Synopsis for Homewrecker

Two women find themselves in all the same places: the same yoga class, the same coffee shop…what are the odds! But when the intense, extroverted Linda (Precious Chong) coerces the reserved, deferential Michelle (Alex Essoe) into visiting her home for a spontaneous interior design consultation, it quickly becomes clear that Linda has something more sinister on her mind than throw pillows.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Although I’ve seen similar stories, this one had its own twists and turns to make it original and unexpected. The performances were phenomenal and definitely the best part about Homewrecker.

I understand the concept of being nice and going along with things just to make things easier like Michelle does in the film. However, I would never just go to a strangers house especially alone no matter how friendly and welcoming they were. This was a recipe for disaster from the getgo and it just gets worse as the story goes on. Always trust your gut instinct, it rarely fails. Although I knew for certain right away that Linda was crazy, I didn’t expect all the twists and turns we discover along the way. They make this film stand out and unique.

As always, Alex Essoe gives a winning performance as Michelle. Her character goes through a mind-bending transformation throughout this story that makes her stronger both inside and out. She no longer is just surviving, she is fighting to survive. Meanwhile Precious Chong is utterly brilliant and terrifying. Her character gave me the heebie jeebies and you could just see the crazy and desperation in her eyes. Red flags everywhere.

Homewrecker has very minimal blood and gore, but there is some and it’s done with perfection. You don’t expect it and when it happens, you’re like oh man this crazy biatch just took psycho to a whole new level.

Final Thoughts

If you’re sick of being that nice girl who does along with everything to make others happy, watch this and call me in the morning. Seriously, though. Sometimes being too nice gets you in trouble and Homewrecker delivers this perfectly. This is an entertaining and thrilling film, that I think everyone will enjoy. It had its premiere at Fantastic Fest on Friday, September 20th and will be showing again on September 24th. So, be sure to check it out and let us know what you think!
