Fantasia Fest 2021 Review: Mickey Reece’s ‘Agnes’ is Dark and Intense with Fantastic Character Development

Another great film that premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival was the horror thriller, Agnes. The film was directed by Mickey Reece as well as written by them and John Selvidge. The cast includes Chris Browning, Mary Buss, Sean Gunn, Ben Hall, Zandy Hartig, Jake Horowitz, Hayley McFarland, Molly C. Quinn, Chris Sullivan, and Rachel True.

Agnes

Synopsis for Agnes

Rumors of demonic possession at a religious convent prompts a church investigation into the strange goings-on among its nuns. A disaffected priest and his neophyte are confronted with temptation, bloodshed and a crisis of faith.

Horror that centers around religion and demonic possession always seems to creep me out far more than other horror sub-genres and Agnes was quite disturbing. The whole situation with Agnes is horrifying and I feel like the convent failed her. Her story changes everyone for better and worst.

Agnes

All of the acting was phenomenal but I have to applause Molly C. Quinn for her ground-breaking performance, probably her best one yet. Her character development throughout the film was intense and captivating and you could relate to her. Everyone’s had that moment in life where they question everything and what their purpose is.

Beyond the performances, the cinematography and dark imagery really helped deliver a dark, nightmarish atmosphere that felt claustrophobic, wicked, and hopeless. The special effects were fantastic and just the perfect amount of blood and gore.

Agnes

After writing this review, I can honestly say, Agnes was one of my favorites from Fantasia Fest 2021 and some of the imagery has stuck with me (not sure if that’s a good thing, though). I hope others get a chance to check it out and let PopHorror know what you think if you do!
