Devil’s Night: Douglas A. Plomitallo’s ‘HALLOWEEN CANDY’ (2025) – Review

Firstly, I happen to love anthology films with a passion, but some are just, well, stupid.  I have to be honest, there are a lot of amateur filmmakers handling these movies. However, Halloween Candy changed that mentality. Because it was bad in a good way. I will try to explain it throughout my review.

Let’s get down to it.

Synopsis

Spending her first Halloween alone, a recently divorced writer searches for inspiration from trick-or-treaters who come to her door. The night becomes a nightmare when one surprise visitor makes this Halloween one she will never forget.

The Rundown

Normally, I can at least pick one short I didn’t like. For me, though I am loyal to the Terrifier series, everyone nailed that mission. However, All Hallows Eve has a really silly vibe, but in a bad way. For me its the Alien Segment. I cannot stand watching that, not because it scares me, just because it was pretty bad and I lost interest. I promise, though, I love all the different stories.

The film feels like a wild roller coaster of sorted terror, with really great practical FX, that can thrive on things nostalgic, reading all these short horror books with a flashlight, because back then, we were already desensitized, and we conquered our nightmares. Thats exacrly how Halloween Candy delivers. It can be silly, or very, very dark. It made me feel like a kid with the aesthetic, everything took me back to that sacred night we had, it’s long gone, we can trick or treat from the back of cards now.

I kept my mind open because it’s a recently released film on Tubi, and I thought the streaming service is a hub for growing up. However; A lot of times their horror section is very mediocre, I think there are plenty who agree with me. I had only seen the first five minutes of some movies, knowing it isn’t going to deliver. Halloween Candy got right down to business. There are stories of murder, and revenge, and much, much more. I can easily walk away, saying this film will be in my regular rotation. I didn’t have to think while watching this film, as the stories are being written by someone who is under the control of the trick-or-treaters’ youthful stride. Those times are long gone; now we are overwhelmed with princesses and Harry Potter.

In The End

Halloween Candy made me feel like a kid again. I can remember those sacred nights when our parents let us rule the neighborhood. There was candy and little monsters galore. Neighbors turned their homes into haunted yards, with someone who was going to jump out at you. with mountains of candy to make our dentist lose their mind.

Halloween Candy hit me hard with nostalgia. I feel like the film itself paid homage to all those 80’s and 90’s horror movies. I think her descent into madness and alcohol consumption says a lot about what writers deal with, even journalists like me. That made me feel a little more relatable to the character. Only I don’t drink. Halloween Candy is streaming on Tubi, and I would give it at least one watch.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
