Das Ghoul is making moves in the horror genre. It’s not quite punk or hard rock; it’s a perfect mix. Their sound isn’t describable; it’s just excellent. We got to sit down for a small interview with frontman Craig The Plague, where we dig into the band, first-time experiences, and more! Enjoy!
PopHorror: How long has the group been together?
Craig the Plague: We have been playing gigs together as a three-piece since 2016. In 2019, we added keyboards, which helped form our sound.
PopHorror: When did you first fall in love with horror movies?
Craig the Plague: I probably watched it at around 11 after watching An American Werewolf in London. It is still one of my personal favorites. My uncle had a vast horror film collection, so I was lucky to see some great films.
PopHorror: Where do you get the inspiration for your sound?
Craig the Plague: Our songs are short, dark comedy stories often with a horror twist. So, in many ways, the subject matter inspires the music—kind of like adding a score to a film.
PopHorror: You have a tight sound; how often do you practice?
Craig the Plague: Thank you very much, but the truth is, not that often, haha. We all have real-life things to take care of, but we put some hours in when shows are coming up.
PopHorror: Are any of your songs based on Horror Movies?
Craig the Plague: No, not intentionally, anyway. Some may well have similarities to movies that are impossible to avoid, but none are directly based on any movie.
Das Ghoul: Video Nasty
PopHorror: Are you a touring band?
Craig the Plague: No, day jobs make that difficult, but squeezing the odd tour in would be fun. It’s always good to get out to new places.
PopHorror: Do you see yourselves as horror punk or just a rock band that loves horror?
Craig the Plague: We describe ourselves as gothic-tinged, horror-stained, punk’n’roll terrorpop! That just about sums us up. Not so much “blood and guts”, we lean more towards the eerie, creepy side.
PopHorror: When did you first find your love for music?
Craig the Plague: Early eighties, I imagine. I remember seeing Adam & the Ants and loving the theatrical side but with great songs. I love bands with their own thing going on with both image and sound. A band should look like a gang, I think.
PopHorror: What do you see for the future of the band?
Craig the Plague: Well, we’ve just joined forces with We Are Horror Records and have a brand new EP on June 7th titled “MORE SPECTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK.” More gigs, more songs, more fun!
PopHorror: What would you say to someone just starting and ready to give up?
Craig the Plague: It depends on what they’re looking to achieve. If they want to give up after just starting, they must lack patience and enthusiasm and will need a lot of both. Mostly, though, you have to enjoy what you’re doing. If you love doing it, the thought of giving up won’t enter your mind.
We want to thank Craig the Plague for this quick interview and for giving us some time.
You can find Das Ghoul on almost any streaming platform. Go enjoy them!
