I’m not very familiar with mockumentaries. My knowledge of the genre includes This is Spinal Tap and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and that’s about the extent of it. Recently, I was given the chance to check out The Bungfodders Make a Horror Movie, a mockumentary from the makers of The Axeman of Henderson County. Read on for my thoughts.
The Bundfodders Make A Horror Movie is the latest film from the husband and wife filmmaking team of Cindy and Larry Parmiter (The Axeman of Henderson County 2014). The film stars Cindy Parmiter, Larry Parmiter, and Ashlyn Parmiter, and features cameo appearances by Zach Galligan (Gremlins 1984), wrestler Brian Cage, Face Off finalist Jordan Patton and YouTube personality Shawn C. Phillips.
The Bungfodders have a dream and that dream is to become famous by making their very own horror movie. Follow along on their hilarious misadventures as they audition actors, scout locations, meet celebrities, try their hands at special effects and much, much more. What happens when people with no money, no experience and no clue decide that they want to be filmmakers? You’re about to find out in The Bungfodders Make a Horror Movie.
The Bungfodders Make a Horror Film walks a fine line between fiction and reality, to the point where I can’t tell where the Parmiters end and where the Bungfodders begin. The Parmiters are absolutely committed to their roles as inept wannabe indie filmmakers who go about everything all wrong. They seek filmmaking advice from Gremlins actor Zach Galligan (whom they mistake as Henry Thomas from E.T. and Zach Galifinakis), who is visibly annoyed and uncomfortable with the entire situation. They meet professional wrestler Brian Cage and proposition him to be in their film, which ends with him thinking they are trying to get him to participate in a porn film. They meet Jordan Patton from Face Off and ask him about making “a fake bunghole” for their film so they can shove a machete up it. Jordan Patton is the only person who seems genuinely amused with the proceedings.
They lose actors due to Earl Ray touching their boobs. They try to make fake blood out of ketchup packets. Its completely ridiculous, over the top and funny. I really don’t know how much of this movie was actually scripted and how much was just them meeting and fucking with celebrities, but either way, the end result is absolutely hysterical.
The Bungfodders Make A Horror Movie is a fun little slice of reality bending, no budget entertainment. I absolutely loved the ridiculousness of the characters and their situations, as well as the Parmiter’s dedication to their respective roles. If you are a fan of mockumentaries, then I highly recommend you check out The Bungfodders Make A Horror Movie when it is released next month.
