Brian Trenchard- Smith’s ‘LEPRECHAUN 3’ (1995) – Retro Review

Brian Trenchard-Smith’s Leprechaun 3 is, well, let’s just say it’s interesting. For some reason, I never really cared for the Leprechaun series; this was no different. But I am committed to writing a very neutral opinion here. What is it I don’t like? I don’t even really know why. Back then, it was the best of the best in gore or cringe moments in blockbuster movies. The film still kept me at a distance, though I have seen it maybe a hundred times when someone puts it on TV, and let’s leave it at that. The film is a complete description of 90s horror films. It is everything you would expect out of an off-the-wall film. The ridiculous storyline actually makes sense.

Why do I think that? Let’s find out in the review.

Synopsis

An evil leprechaun finds himself in Las Vegas, where he proceeds to cause mischief by killing people, granting twisted wishes, and infecting a young man with his green blood

Brian Trenchard- Smith directed the film, which stars Warwick Davis.

The Rundown

Out of the Leprechaun films, this was the most absurd, I mean that in a nice way. The idea of this little guy running around Las Vegas, terrorizing people, and the whole gold thing kind of wore out its welcome in my small interest. I can’t argue that the movie is terrible because everyone has an opinion. Warwick Davis gave a great representation of an evil little version of Freddy Krueger.

Leprechaun 3 is a nightmare setting; the entire series seems to have the same plot with a creepy area of town. To know he was going after gang members or an exotic dancer. It was definitely the type of film that wound up on Walmart’s 5-dollar rack. Maybe you could get all ten movies for $6.50. That makes me feel horrible, because no one’s hard work belongs on that rack to begin with. Leprechaun still deserves a little love.

It’s All An Act

The acting is not an issue in this film. Everyone knew their goal, and they reached it. Was it a bit corny? Yes, because it was the perfect person to die in the film. The kills were pretty intense for a kid. The practical effects shone bright in this film. I will admit I do find some Leprechaun 3 scenes extremely hilarious. In the 90s, horror was at a weird crossroads. Some went the route of future reality horror; the rest went straight to VHS. I find those are the best.

In The End

I can respect anyone’s opinion on this film. The film was easily uninteresting. However, I won’t battle it out. Leprechaun 3 is sort of a sit-down movie. It will leave you laughing instead of being scared of the dark. It does have some brutal kills. I think in the end, I expected it because I had seen a lot of horror films. We were desensitized to a lot throughout my love for monsters. All of us had seen the worst of the worst, and it is still unsalvagable for me. However, if you haven’t seen the film, this is your chance as it is streaming free on multiple platforms.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
