The Blood In The Snow Canadian Film Festival reviews continue. Next up is a short I had a chance to watch for review. This dark comedy, Letters, intrigued me. Not only am I starting to discover dark comedies, I am also starting to really enjoy short films. It is amazing to me that something can be done so well in such a short amount of time. Does Letters fulfill expectations? Read on to find out!
Official Synopsis:
Phil and Gerty play their usual Sunday afternoon game of “Letters”. But today is different. Something dark boils below the surface of the game, setting off a series of unexpected events, forever changing their marriage.
Trafeilio Studios presents Letters, a short film written and directed by Michael Goyert. The film is based on the short story “Death by Scrabble” by Charlie Fish. The film stars Nelson Leis and Vanessa Walsh as Phil and Gertrude, a married couple that proves wordplay with your spouse can be dangerous.
This film is based around Phil and Gertrude’s usual Sunday game of Letters, much to the dismay of Phil. Through the couple’s game play, the letter squares and dark comedic moments, we learn about their marital issues and the revelations of some of their secrets. The movie delves into the idea of “What if my thoughts came to be?” The acting is superb and the comedic moments were definitely darker in nature, as well as some laugh out loud moments.
Final Thoughts:
Letters is a brilliant, dark, comedic short film. I found myself laughing out loud at parts. At the same time, I was impressed with the acting and the elements of the plot twists in such a short amount of time. This film is premiering this Saturday night at The Blood In The Snow Canadian Film Festival. If you have a chance to go, do not miss this one.
