Amelie McLain burst onto the horror scene with her work as ‘Little Pale Girl‘ In Terrifier 2. She has turned into an icon for the B-movie crowd. My initial reaction was a bit of uneasiness. Her work spans multiple outlets. We were happy to get an interview with Amelie to talk about a lot of different subjects.
Check it out now!
PopHorror: You were a last-minute character add in Terrifier 2 after a convention. How did that come about, becoming a cast member?
Amelie McLain: I submitted my audition reel from an open casting call and Damien reached out and really liked my audition. I flew up for a meeting with Damien and to work on the makeup and overall look of Little Pale Girl. A short while later, I returned for my first shoot date.
PopHorror: You have also been cast in General Hospital, and another film entitled Transference. What is your favorite role so far?
Amelie McLain: My role as Sadie in Transference was my first movie, so that makes it very special. I enjoyed the fast pace of filming on GH and having lines and dialog with the other actors but I will say the opportunity to play the Little Pale Girl was my favorite! Being able to bring the character to life from Damien’s creation is an honor, not to mention how special it is to have such wonderful horror fans support the character.
Did you know there are people who have Little Pale Girl tattooed on them?!
PopHorror: What inspired you to get into acting?
Amelie McLain: The school I attend is a very arts-driven school. When I was in 3rd grade, a 5th-grade student at my school was (is still) a professional actress and I admired her. My 3rd-grade teacher taught her a few years earlier and connected us. She introduced me to her talent agent and the agent signed me that day and I booked my first commercial within a month. It was a big nationwide John Deere commercial. I worked a lot in commercials at the beginning of my acting career.
PopHorror: In Terrifier 2, you spent a lot of time with David Howard Thornton throughout the movie. Was your relationship the same way off-screen?
Amelie McLain: David is so sweet! That is hard to believe given the sinister role he plays as Art the Clown. David is a lot of fun to be around. I love to hang out with him when we are on the road at conventions. We try to go to dinner and hang out when we travel. Also, when we are getting into character at the conventions, we hang out and laugh!
PopHorror: Is your appearance in Terrifier 2 close to your original cosplay?
Amelie McLain: For my audition, I put on a black wig and had a lollipop, went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror, and made really weird, scary, sinister faces. We taped it and submitted it to Damien.
PopHorror: How long did it take to complete the “Little Pale Girl” character?
Amelie McLain: It took three hours to get into character and three to get out. It was my real hair for Little Pale Girl, so there was a lot of teasing and matting of my hair, which was a whole process once I wrapped shooting, to get it untangled. I wore sclera contacts which required a contact lens specialist to be on set. They would numb my eyes every time they put the contacts in due to the sclera contacts being large in diameter and very thick compared to normal contacts. The dentures I wore, Damien handmade for me. Damien did all of my makeup.
PopHorror: Do you think you will stay in the horror genre as an actress?
Amelie McLain: Yes, I love it!
PopHorror: How did you get into character as the little pale girl?
Amelie McLain: Working with Damien and David on the Little Pale Girl was unbelievable. I tried to listen and take direction from Damien and also David was a huge inspiration. I would watch him when I was not filming and learn from him. Then, I would just play around with facial expressions and thoughts when they came to mind and Damien would give me feedback.
PopHorror: You have done quite a few in-costume photo ops at conventions. Is it easy to stay in character outside of the movie setting?
Amelie McLain: I think it makes it special that David and I stay in character. When we leave the makeup room one thing that makes it difficult is the fact that people try to talk to us and it is hard to stay silent.
PopHorror: Do you have any other movies lined up after Terrifier 3?
Amelie McLain: I am constantly auditioning for roles and have a few projects in discussion.
PopHorror: What advice would you give someone who may be afraid to chase their dream?
Amelie McLain: I booked a one-way flight to LA to audition for General Hospital. If I booked it, I would need to stay in LA and film my scenes. If I didn’t book it, I would book my flight back home. I think you have to keep going for it and stay after your dreams. Book that flight!
