I absolutely love musicals and one of my favorites is Little Shop of Horrors, so I have a thing for musicals with a sci-fi horror bent. I was extremely excited when I:Scream was announced and even more so when it was announced halfway through funding that it would be a musical, I:Scream A Minty Musical. I recently had the opportunity to check it out. Read on for my thoughts!
Charlie, our hopeless protagonist, is a scientist hopelessly in love with a childhood friend, Logainne. Their plans for an ice cream sundae date get shelved when Logainne heads to the town CCG competition, leaving Charlie behind at the lab. Through an innocent accident, some experimental DNA-altering chemicals fall into the mint chocolate chip treat, causing it to gain sentience. ‘Minty’ as it is referred to from this point on in the prose, has one desire: to eat everything it can. When Charlie realizes what has happened, they take on the quest to cross the town and try to warn Logainne before the ice cream devours her. Along the way, Charlie teams up with their best friend, Sean, and the town’s retired ice cream man with a checkered past, Reggie. Together the three must find a way to melt the minty menace all while Charlie is being pursued by the town’s nerd-hating cop, Barry Griswold. Will Charlie and the gang make it to the competition before Minty can destroy everything they hold dear? Only time will tell.
I:Scream A Minty Musical was directed by Aleen Isley from a script written with Steve Rudzinski. The film stars B. Barnabel, Alex Hazen, Marie Taylor, David Deitz, Ben Dietels, Steve Rudzinski, Chanda Rawlings, and Alex Brosoky.

I absolutely loved I:Scream A Minty Musical. It’s fun, hilarious and has wonderfully catchy songs. I really enjoyed the cast. B. Barnabel is excellent as Charlie. They just want to save the person they love and be loved back. Alex Hazen is really funny as Sean, wanting everyone to call him Die Hard. Marie Taylor is great as Logainne, Charlie’s childhood friend and love interest. I wish we got more time with her. I loved David Dietz in Curtains for Christmas so I was excited to see him here as Reggie, the Ice Cream Man with a checkered past, and he does a wonderful job with the character. An Ice Cream Man named Reggie reminds me of Phantasm and that’s definitely not a bad thing. It was nice to see Barry Griswold, father of Steve Rudzinski’s Meowy movies hero Wally Griswold, makes an appearance here and I love that it’s just Steve Rudzinski with a moustache and a different voice. Steve is hilarious as always.

Mike Trebilcock and Aleen Isley did a great job with the music. You really feel the emotions that the characters are going through conveyed through the songs they are performing. One of my favorite musical moments is Do the Churn. I love that it’s a full musical number with a full dance scene to go with it. I really liked the story and how it was basically a love story at its heart, despite its sci-fi elements. The ending was a little bittersweet to me.
Final Thoughts
I:Scream A Minty Musical is a sci-fi musical comedy that is a ton of fun. The film has a great cast and wonderful musical numbers. Highly recommend.
