Cat’s Eye is an anthology film based on short stories by Stephen King. Released on April 12, 1985, the film follows a stray cat who links three tales of suspense and horror. Directed by Lewis Teague (Cujo 1983) from a screenplay written by King himself, Cat’s Eye stars many talented actors such as a young Drew Barrymore (Firestarter 1984), James Wood (Vampires 1998), Alan King (Casino 1995), and many more.
Fun Facts:
1) There are many references to Stephen King’s work throughout the film, including Cujo (1983), Christine (1983), Pet Sematary (1989), and The Dead Zone (1983).
2) In the short, “The Ledge,” Cressner flips through a magazine on the coffee table. That magazine is the July 1976 issue of Penthouse, which featured the short story the segment was based on.
3) The Stephen King short story, “Sometimes They Come Back,” was originally planned to be adapted as a segment in this movie, but Dino De Laurentiis felt the story was strong enough to have its own movie, which was released in 1991.
4) This is the first Stephen King film to receive a PG-13 rating.
5) The Police song “Every Breath You Take” is heard in a few places. Since the original version was too expensive for this low-budget production, a cover was used.
6) Stephen King wrote this script with Drew Barrymore in mind because Producer Dino De Laurentiis was impressed by her performance in Firestarter (1984).
Goofs:
1) In the beginning of the short, “General,” the troll has a sword with a wavy blade. At the end, when the father picks up the tiny sword, the blade is straight.
2) In “Quitters, Inc.,” the mysterious man’s wet, muddy boots leave footprints after he walks out of the closet, but they never made footprints leading into the closet.
3) The clock in the “Quitters, Inc.” reception area changes from 2:40 to 3:15 in a matter of moments.
4) In “The Ledge,” when Robert Hayes gets past the falling section of sign, there is a hole in the right shoulder on the back of his shirt. When he enters the apartment, the hole is no longer there.
It’s so crazy to me that Cat’s Eye came out 35 years ago. I remember watching it growing up. I was born in ’99 but I remember making my dad put on the VHS for me over and over, specifically for the last story. Do you have any fun memories with Cat’s Eye? If you do, let us know in the comments below!
