Villain Of The Week: Chucky a.k.a Charles Lee Ray

Welcome to PopHorror’s newest series Villain Of The Week! We thought it would be awesome to give tribute to horror characters we all know and love.  To kick off this series in the right manner, we are going to begin with someone who has risen to epic levels of stardom within the horror genre.  You may recognize him from iconic films such as Child’s Play, Child’s Play 2, Child’s Play 3, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, and Curse of Chucky.  Let’s give a warm congratulations to our very first villain of the week: Chucky a.k.a Charles Lee Ray!

THE ROAD TO BECOMING A VILLAIN

As we all know, Chucky was not always a doll.  In the 1988 film Child’s Play, we are greeted with an intense chase scene between the cops and serial killer Charles Lee Ray (also known as The Lakeshore Strangler). Desperate to get away, Charles ducks into a massive toy store. Things do not end well for him as he inflicts some dangerous wounds leaving him at death’s door. At a time like this, it would be very beneficial to have a tad of knowledge about voodoo.  Lucky for Charles, he does. He grabs the nearest Good-Guy doll and proceeds to play Hide The Soul.

Technically, Charles Lee Ray was already a villain before he transferred his soul into a doll. However, he had yet to exist as Chucky. Apparently, there are strict voodoo deadlines when transporting souls from one place to another.  He becomes a little more villainous each time he fails to find a new human body. Honestly, I believe we all would.  Do you know what that would mean?  We would be depraved of any human luxuries we enjoy right now. As humans, we can sympathize with Chucky in an odd sense. He did bring this upon himself though. This is why we always root for him to stay in Chucky form. In later films, he does become more acclimated to his new body and even finds love.

CATCH PHRASES

With every great villain comes awesome dialogue that we find ourselves quoting back to each other.  Here are some of Chucky’s most memorable quotes!

“Hi, I’m Chucky and I’m your friend til the end. Hi De Ho Ha Ha Ha!”

“The only person that I let in on the fact that I was still alive was a six-year-old kid.  I’m gonna be six years old again.  Well, John, it’s been fun, but I gotta go.  I have a date with a six-year-old boy…and you have a date with death.”

Lady in the elevator: Ugly doll. Chucky: Fuck you.

[After running a Britney look-alike off the road]  “Ooops, I did it again!”

“GIVE ME THE BOY!!”

“Don’t fuck with the Chuck!”

BEST KILLS

Every true villain has some epic kills under their belt. Significantly, Chucky has certainly done his fair share of murdering folks. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and pinpoint some of his best kills.

Aunt Maggie –  Do you remember Aunt Maggie from the first film Child’s Play?  Well, according to Chucky, she was a real bitch who got what she deserved. Little Andy Barclay’s mother bought Chucky for him as a birthday present.  All were oblivious that Chucky was really alive. One fateful night, Aunt Maggie is the unlucky chosen one to baby-sit Andy while his mother is out. Before long, Aunt Maggie finds herself being hit in the head with a hammer and crashing out a window while falling several stories to the pavement below. Ouch.

John the Voodoo Expert – Also from the first film Child’s Play comes another favorite Chucky kill. Before Chucky transferred his soul into a Good-Guy doll he practiced voodoo with a man named John. He makes an unannounced visit to John’s home after realizing he has the ability to be hurt. Confused, Chucky demands answers.  John responds that Chucky will become more human the longer he stays in the doll’s body. Then, John refuses to help Chucky because he was using what was taught to him for evil. Chucky anticipated some backlash so he brought along a voodoo doll linked to John. First, he breaks the voodoo doll’s leg which initially breaks John’s as well. At his mercy, John proceeds to tell Chucky that he must transfer his soul to the first person he revealed his secret. Chucky stabs the voodoo doll and leaves John in a puddle of his own blood. Clever Chucky at his finest!

Obviously, Chucky has many more epic kills, but these two are my personal favorites. Feel free to comment on your favorite Chucky kills and quotes!  Also, don’t be shy!  Who else would you like to see make Villain Of The Week!?  Congratulations once again to Chucky a.k.a Charles Lee Ray!
