Interview with Morocco Vaughn, Director of ‘Mollywood’

Morocco Vaughn is name you should become familiar with. I truly believe he’s on his way to becoming the next Jordan Peele, but with his own style and vision. I recently watched his new horror film Mollywood (read our review – here) and it was so fun, refreshing, and delightfully sinful.

That’s why I was super stoked to talk to him about his new film, the casting process, his favorite scenes, and more. Read all about it down below and be sure to check out Mollywood, which is now available on VOD and Digital.

PopHorror – Thanks for talking with me, Morocco! How did you get involved in filmmaking?

Morocco Vaughn – I went to film school in Columbia College in Chicago. I started going there when I was still in high school at 16 years old. That was my introduction to film.

PopHorror – Wow that’s impressive. Ever thought about acting as well?

Morocco Vaughn – I’m a little too shy; but yes, I did think about acting. The older I got the more my behind the camera personality worn out.

PopHorror – What was the first film you worked on?

Morocco Vaughn – The first film I worked on was called Get Together. I did it in Chicago when I was 20 years old. I think I am credited as an assistant director and associate producer.

PopHorror – I’ll have to check it out. Your new film Mollywood is a horror thriller, do you enjoy that genre?

Morocco Vaughn – Yes, I love the genre because it keeps expanding, especially with new films like Get Out and Us. The possibilities have opened up for someone like myself, an African American filmmaker.

PopHorror – This is very true! Can you tell the audience what the film is about?

Morocco Vaughn – The film is a modern day Jack the Ripper story. We have a character, Chase, who is obsessed with ridding the city of transient people – the people who betray his moral codes and drug users.

PopHorror – You have quite an interesting cast. How did the casting process come about?

Mollywood

Morocco Vaughn – The casting process is one of the weirdest casting processes that probably ever took place. My writer handpicked a lot of the cast before I came on board. The only people I added to the plot were Waka Flocka and London on da Track. The writer actually picked some amazing people to work with.

PopHorror – I love the cast. I also love the story. It was definitely a different take on a serial killer story. Do you think fans of the genre are going to appreciate its uniqueness?

Morocco Vaughn – I hope so because it is one of those films that sits on the borderline. You don’t even know whether to truly call it a horror or whether to call it a thriller. I hope that it holds true to the genre and it’s not cliché because it is a little different. I don’t want to give away the ending, but it is a little bit different.

PopHorror – Yes it is and I think fans will love it. What was your favorite scene?

Morocco Vaughn – My favorite scene would have to be the hospital murder where Chase encounters the Angie character. Then he slices her neck [laughs].

PopHorror – That is a good one! Any upcoming projects you’d like to talk about?

Morocco Vaughn – I have a script that I have been working on called Outside Looking In and that is a very racially motivated horror thriller.

PopHorror – Oh man, I can’t wait to check out that one. Good luck in all your upcoming projects and I look forward to seeing them all.
