When you watch zombie movies, typically, you root for the humans, right? Let me just say that the 2018 film, Patient Zero , may just have you unintentionally rooting for the zombies!
Patient Zero (2018) is a action horror film that is written by Mike Lee (Dark Summer 2015) and directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky (Cold Hell 2017). It stars Matt Smith (Terminator Genisys 2018), Natalie Dormer (The Forest 2016), and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada 2006). The movie centers around an outbreak of a mutated form of rabies that spread from animals to humans, creating zombies within seconds. The human race is struggling to find a cure and to beat this enemy. Fortunately, the military found a secret weapon in Morgan (Matt Smith).
Morgan maintained his humanity, despite contracting the mutated rabies virus. This infection provides him with the ability to communicate with zombies. He uses this to interrogate the infected with the hopes of finding the first person infected to create a cure. Will finding patient zero lead to the salvation of humanity or its demise?

It was exciting getting the opportunity to review a zombie film. I have a deep love and appreciation for all types of zombie films, everything from the comedic to the scary to the action flicks. If there are zombies in a movie, just sign me up! Unfortunately, this one was quite the disappointment. The film had a good budget, as can be determined by the production quality and cinematography. It has a good cast, too. But that is all Patient Zero has going for it.
It was extremely difficult to connect with the characters, since there is no character development. There wasn’t even a connection felt toward Morgan who is the main character and hero of the film. I actually found myself rooting for the zombies. The plot is greatly lacking, and the dialogue is forced. It is quite unfortunate, as the idea behind the film was definitely intriguing. So much could have been done with the plot and dialogue to be able to deliver an excellent film.
The one saving grace of the film is Stanley Tucci’s performance as The Professor. He is definitely a talented actor. He delivered the best performance possible with the material he was provided.
If you are looking for a zombie film to check out, keep looking. Patient Zero (2018) isn’t it!
