Happy 59th Birthday, Jamie Lee Curtis!

Jamie Lee Curtis is born of horror royalty. Her mother, Janet Leigh, was cinema’s first scream queen. It’s only fitting that her daughter, Jamie Lee, would go on to be one of the most recognized scream queens of all time! Please join all of us at PopHorror in wishing Jamie Lee Curtis a very happy 59th birthday today!

Jamie Lee Curtis

The Early Years

After a mere year on television, Jamie Lee’s first film role was an iconic one. She starred in John Carpenter’s Halloween in 1978 when she was just 19 years old. In many ways, Carpenter’s film marked the birth of the slasher era. Her character, Laurie Strode, is one of the earliest examples of the prototypical “Final Girl” in modern horror cinema.

The success of Halloween led to an avalanche of horror films in the 1980s. In 1980 alone, Jamie Lee Curtis starred in three classics: The Fog, Prom Night, and Terror Train. Curtis then returned as Laurie Strode in 1981’s Halloween II. Did you know she did uncredited voice work in Carpenter’s Escape From New York and for Halloween III? I didn’t either!

Halloween Resurrected

Jamie Lee Curtis strayed from horror and “went legits,” as Randy said in Scream. She returned to Halloween in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later in 1998. This was going to be her farewell to the franchise, but she was dragged back for the woeful Halloween Resurrection in 2002.

Laurie Strode fans can rejoice, however. Jamie Lee Curtis took to Twitter recently to announce a new Halloween film due out in 2018! October 19, 2018, to be exact. Universal Pictures, Blumhouse, and John Carpenter are on board. How will the new Halloween fit in to the series? Your guess is as good as mine! They say they’re going to ignore everything but the first film, but that still leaves us with more questions than answers. I guess all we can do is wait and see!

Happy Birthday, Jamie Lee Curtis!

If you’re on Twitter, go wish @jamieleecurtis a very happy birthday! She’s also on Facebook these days as well, if you are so inclined!
