PopHorror Let's Get Scared
Way back in 2021, Bloody Summer Camp was released to the world. I enjoyed it quite a bit so I was really excited when they announced a sequel: Bloody Summer Camp 2: Red Horizon. After a long wait, the film is finally here. Read on for my thoughts.
Synopsis
After the murders in 1986, Camp Trustfall was closed down and remained closed for 8 years. In 1994, a new owner reopens the camp as Camp Red Horizon and the camp’s first year is a success. After the kids are all sent home, the counselors prepare to close the camp down for the season when counselors being to go missing. Ms. Crowell is convinced Devilface is back but the new camp owner doesn’t share her concern. Determined to stop another camp tragedy, Ms. Crowell seeks out help to stop Devilface and end it once and for all.
Bloody Summer Camp 2: Red Horizon was written and directed by Dave Kerr. The film stars Felissa Rose, Dave Sheridan, Diana Prince, Joe Bob Briggs, Sushii Xhyvette Holder, Nathan Baesel, Louis Altman, Rick Jermain, Rachel Vangelist, Sean Cameron Dalton and Chloe Rogers.
Bloody Summer Camp 2: Red Horizon might be the best indie horror slasher that I’ve seen in quite awhile. The film has a wonderful cast and I was thrilled that they brought back Felissa Rose and Dave Sheridan, and gave them more to do this time. Felissa Rose and Dave Sheridan have worked together many times and they play off of each other extremely well. It was nice seeing Nathan Baesel in a horror film again, as I haven’t seen him in anything since Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.
I love seeing Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy The Mail Girl (Diana Prince) in indie horror films but they are usually just small cameo roles. I enjoyed seeing them take on more prominent roles here. A couple actors I wasn’t familiar with that I really was impressed with here are Rachel Vangelist and Chloe Rogers. Their characters Skylar and Casey are the heart and soul of the film.
Bloody Summer Camp 2: Red Horizon does a great job of balancing humor, horror and heart. There are some really funny moments but never at the expense of the horror. FX Artist Amber Fulcher delivers some viciously executed kills with some nice gore. There was some character deaths that I found genuinely shocking, as they were characters I didn’t expect to die. Rarely does a horror film make my jaw drop in this way, but Bloody Summer Camp 2: Red Horizon did.
If I had one minor complaint, it that the ending is rather abrupt and doesn’t resolve everything. Hopefully this means we’ll get a sequel sooner that than later.
Final Thoughts
Bloody Summer Camp 2: Red Horizon is one of the best indie slashers I’ve seen in a long time. The film does a great job of balancing horror, humor and heart and has some genuinely shocking moments. Highly recommended.
