Jason Zink’s ‘STRAIGHT EDGE KEGGER’ (2019) – Retro Review

I grew up in the punk scene. I discovered punk rock when I was 11 years old. The scene sucked me right in, and I felt like I belonged. Also, I loved the energy, the friends, the music, and the basement shows.  It was a wild time. I’m too old to be in the pit, so I became the lame dad with still punk rock roots. Even if the children wanted to hear the Frozen soundtrack, it wasn’t all fun and games; you had to be constantly on guard, from skinheads down to straight-edge people.  Those types of people only had one mission: destroy everything you disagree with. Straight Edge Kegger is entirely focused on the punk rock scene and the dangers that exist.

Sean and Brad

Synopsis

Brad (Cory Kays) is a hardcore member of a straight edge crew led by James (Julio Alexander). However, after an incident involving a kid in the “wrong” T Shirt. He is attacked by the crew while Brad sits back watching, trying not to be involved. After a kind move, Brad begins to see the other side of what’s going on after meeting Sean (Sean Jones) Brad little by little sells out on his straight edge view points and starts to see the fun in things. When Sean and Brad show up to a show at a house he meets Maybe (Evey Reidy) and falls in love. The show however; abruptly ends and things turn into survival when Brad’s old friends show up killing everyone in their way. Will Brad and his friends survive the night?

Maybe and Brad

The Rundown

I enjoyed Straight Edge Kegger a lot. Its raw power shows you a part of the punk rock scene, and we don’t talk about it much anymore. We leave those arguments for the young kids and then take our values and do something good with them. Most people, like me, grew away from the scene, not the music, but all the subcultures involved are bonkers. I have been stuck in many brawls trying to make my way out of the venue.

Straight Edge Kegger is different in a certain way. It has some amazing kills. James causes complete chaos. As the crew makes their way around the house, Brad and Maybe are trapped in a bedroom guarded by one of the crew members. There is no way out, and it will take fighting back to save themselves. One by one, they turn the tables on the straight-edge crew, killing them off the way the crew slaughtered their friends. The kill scenes are worth the watch. Straight Edge Kegger delivers everything from fighting friends and selling out to having a good time and pretty crazy gore. Some moments will make you cringe; I know this because it hit me right in the gut with memories.

In The End

Straight Edge Kegger is a good movie for anyone. Even if they don’t understand the punk rock idea, they can follow along for enjoyment. I suggest that if you like lousy acting and over-the-top kill scenes, I can guarantee you will enjoy this movie.

Straight Edge Kegger is available on Tubi, Amazon Prime, and Roku Channel, to name a few; these are all free. What are you still doing here?! Go watch it!
