The Moon

Yong-hwa Kim’s ‘THE MOON’ (2023) – Blu-Ray Review

I really enjoy films where someone has to fight for their life against insurmountable odds. The Moon, recently released on Blu-Ray from Well Go USA, is that type of film. From the moment I saw the trailer, I knew it was a film I had to see.

Check out the trailer for The Moon and read on to see what I thought.

The Moon (2023) Synopsis

Seven years after the first fully manned mission to the moon ends in disaster, a second spaceflight is successfully launched. When a strong solar flare causes the spacecraft to malfunction, an astronaut is left stranded in space and quickly running out of oxygen. The Space Center must attempt an amazing rescue mission to bring him home and avert yet another fatal catastrophe.

The Moon was written and directed by Yong-hwa Kim (Along With The God: The Last 49 Days). The film stars Sol Kyung-Gu (Memoir of A Murderer), Do Kyung-soo (Along With The God: The Last 49 Days), Kim Hee-ae (Moonlit Winter), Jo Han-chul (The Wailing), Park Byeong-eun (I’m a Cyborg But That’s OK), Choi Byung-mo (The Handmaiden), and Shim Young-eun (The Roundup: No Way Out).

The Moon

The Moon is one of those films that keeps you guessing if the hero is going to make it till the end of the film. Hwang Sun-woo goes through absolute hell in the film. Surviving an initial malfunction that leaves him the sole surviving crew member, he struggles to complete his mission to the moon and return home to Korea. He’s got a lot to prove as his father died during a previous attempt and he wants to honor his father. Sun-woo doesn’t give up, even as the odds are stacked against him, despite a large crew on earth fighting alongside him to figure out ways to bring him home as time runs out and attempts fail.

Do Kyung-soo does a wonderful job as Hwang Sun-woo. He portrays the character in a way that you constantly root for him throughout the struggles he goes through. The Moon is a very emotional and tense film, that also deals with the political side of space missions and rescues. The Blu-Ray includes a theatrical trailer, a short behind-the-scenes doc, a short character bio-doc, and a trailer for other Well Go USA Titles.

Final Thoughts

The Moon is action-packed, tense, emotional, and one hell of a ride. If you like survival action thrillers then The Moon is one I definitely recommend you check out.
