I’m Not A Serial Killer (2016) – A Morbid Monster Movie Review

I’ll admit, I’m not usually a big fan of monster flicks. Going into I’m Not A Serial Killer, I was expecting a clichéd killer mentor and killer pupal type of film. But, I’m Not A Serial Killer deceived me into watching a monster flick. Luckily for me, it was a pretty good monster flick.

(Synopsis provided by IMDb.com): In a small midwestern town, John (Max Records), a troubled teen with homicidal tendencies must hunt down a supernatural killer, Mr. Crowley (Christopher Lloyd) whilst keeping his own inner demons at bay.

I’m Not A Serial Killer was just a fun film that had high and low points throughout the story. It brought a morbid sense of humor that horror fans understand and love. I wasn’t a fan of the film bringing subplots and taking away from the main story. For example, the possible love story that never went anywhere, and the random father abandonment that also went nowhere.

I loved the characters. Max Records’ portrayal of the main sociopath was tremendous. Max really showed his acting potential in this film, and I can’t wait to see him in future projects.

Now, the reason I initially wanted to see this film was Christopher Lloyd. Thinking about him playing a serial killer, I was hooked. Then, seeing he was actually playing an organ stealing creature, I was even more psyched! In this film, Christopher hung up his comedic chops and brought out a darker side of him that I personally have never seen and of course, he absolutely killed the role!

When it comes to the special effects, it’s a little obvious the effects are fake and almost laughable. However, CGI hasn’t really had a reputation for being realistic. Considering the film has such a great story, I’ll forgive the effects just this once.

The biggest flaw of this film is it’s perfectly set up to frame John for Crowley’s murders. They set it up that way, but they don’t pursue that route. John has nonchalantly told a fellow student that he thinks about cutting him open, and raised a knife to his mother in anger. Yet, not one person in the film at least saw him as a person of interest. The worst John got was a chat with his therapist.

Final thoughts:

I’m Not A Serial Killer is a fun, morbid monster film that brings something unique to the table. It also reminds horror fans that the things we talk about on a daily basis are actually not normal. Normal is overrated, anyway, and I’m Not A Serial Killer is anything BUT normal! I definitely recommend it to those who are looking for something different!

About Karli Lawson

I basically grew up watching horror films and spooky things. I watched my first horror film when I was 4 years old. I've wanted to be a writer ever since I've read Stephen King books in middle school. I love writing and talking about my favorite genre. I hope to one day be successful in screenwriting and filmmaking. Everything horror, of course!
